BUCHANAN COUNTY, VIRGINIA - BELCHER CEMETERY HARMAN, BUCHANAN COUNTY, VIRGINIA Submitted to The USGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project by: Danica Love - JLOVE17@Houston.rr.com Directions: Take US 460 W for 4.2 miles. Turn left onto VA 609 headed towards Maxie & Harman. Follow VA 609 to VA 614, located after "Entering Harmon" sign but before actual town. Turn left onto VA 614. Follow VA 614 past Dale Road but before Belcher Road Fork. Cemetery is located on the right hand side, on a hill behind a Belcher Residence. Parking is in the residence driveway, and you must go behind the house and up a steep incline to reach it, as the cemetery is located on a small hill alongside a mountain. Cemetery is visible from the street. History: This cemetery is located on land owned by the Belcher family. The first known burials occurred in this cemetery in the late 1890's. It was originally the Belcher family cemetery, but the Belcher's later began to allow neighbors to bury their loved ones here. This cemetery is estimated to hold between 50 and 60 graves, but due to a misguided caretaker who removed the headstones for lawn maintenance in the 1990's, the current list of headstones in this cemetery amounts to 30. Many of the headstones are missing, or were destroyed, and quite a few are bunched together in a corner as the caretaker could not remember their locations. Some of the headstones were nothing more than rocks, and whatever may have been carved into them has long since disappeared or is unreadable. The current listing is of every headstone in the cemetery. The state no longer allows burial in this cemetery, and members of the Belcher family are attempting to have these burials moved as the hill is coming down due to nature. I have obtained all information and compiled this record from personal viewing of the headstones on Feb. 28, 2004.
