Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late James H. and Amanda Justus Smith. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Hurley Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Broyles loved gardening, flowering and cooking. She participated in the Buchanan County Fair where she was awarded many blue ribbons. She was a faithful wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a homemaker. Mrs. Broyles was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dave Broyles, June 1, 2002. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Starlin (Sandra Sue) Dotson, Hurley, Va., and Mrs. Paul (Bernice) Chaney, Abingdon; one daughter-in-law, Mae Broyles, Route 1, Grundy; two sisters, Marjorie Harris, Grundy, and Frankie Burks, Route 1, Grundy; one sister-in-law, Mrs. James (Beatrice) Lester, Princeton, W.Va., four grandchildren, Sharon Marie Hurley, David Broyles, Michael Broyles and Michael Chaney; four great-grandchildren, Chris Dotson, Jonathan Hurley, Adrienne Hurley and Amanda Broyles; one special niece, Patricia Burks; special friends and care givers, Della McCoy, Ruth Estep, Karen Justus, Christina Looney, Christin Looney and Crystal McCoy. She was preceded in death by one son, Herman Eugene (Sonny) Broyles, Dec. 24, 1998; one granddaughter, Carol Lee Broyles, Feb. 13, 1964; two sisters, Elizabeth Layne, Dec. 19, 1977, and Ellen Hackney, Feb. 21, 1997; and one brother, Clark Smith. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 16, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stan Parris and Evangelist Michael Trent officiating with entombment to follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. with services at 7 p.m. Active palblearers will be David Broyles, Chris Dotson, Michael John Broyles, Michael Chaney, Jonathan Hurley, Russell Hurley, Fred Hackney and Brad Burks.
