Jewell WHITEWOOD, Va. -- Mr. Eugene B. Jewell, 80, departed this life Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at a Lebanon hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., and was a son of the late William Henry and Mary Hagerman Jewell. He worked as a mechanic for Jewell Ridge and Jewell Smokeless Coal Companies, working also as a truck driver for several independent mines. His greatest joy was sharing his skills as a mechanic with his friends and family. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II and was a member of the Shelter Free Will Baptist Church at Whitewood. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 318 AF&AM of Richlands. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, John, Bill, A.B. "Buck", Oliver, Elbert, Charles and Roy Jewell; also two sisters, Mrs. Wallace (Watie) Collins and Mrs. F.G. (Madge) Cole. Survivors are one daughter, Shirley Grey Jewell of Presidio, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Silas (Naomi) Bullion of Whtiewood and Mrs. Herman (Ruby) Fuller of Whitewood; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Earl Cole officiating. Interment will follow in the family cemetery on White Mountain. Pallbearers will be nephews and men of the Shelter Baptist Church. Friends may call at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands after 6 p.m. Monday.
