Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Alvie and Mary Stacy McClanahan. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of the New Zion Freewill Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy. He was a retired coal miner. Mr. McClanahan is survived by his wife, Bessie Coleman McClanahan, Hurley; two daughters: Sue Potter, Troy, Va.; and Donna and husband Thomas Cantrell, Lynchburg, Va.; two sons: Richard and wife Peggy McClanahan, Hurley; and Carl McClanahan, Hurley; one brother, Burl McClanahan, New London, Wis.; three stepdaughters; one stepson; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four sisters; and one brother. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at 1 p.m. at New Zion Freewill Baptist Church, Big Rock, Va., with Revs. E.C. Honaker, Jimmy Kerr and Mike Casey officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Friends may call at New Zion Freewill Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. with services Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be men of New Zion Freewill Baptist Church. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.
