Born in Boone County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas Pruitt and Frances Porter Pruitt Combs. He was a long time resident of Buchanan County moving here from War, W.Va., when Harman Mining Company began it's operations on Bull Creek in the 1930's. He served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Assigned to the PBY Catalina Flying Service, his primary duty was search and rescue. He was discharged following wounds he received in the retaking of the Philippine Islands. In the years following the war, he became a successful coal operator and businessman and he was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Big Rock. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruby Irene Falke Pruitt; their children, Lou Annette Sinclair wife of James J. Sinclair of Hampton, Va., Glenna Carol Cantrell wife of Clen Daniel Cantrell of Big Rock, Thomas L. Pruitt husband of Nancy McSherry Pruitt of Grundy and Catherine Lynn Leonard wife of Michael D. Leonard of Belfast, Va.; six granddaughters, Leslie Sinclair, Amber Leonard Musick, Melinda Shane Cantrell, Ashley Leonard Hicks, Jacqueline Frances Pruitt and Amanda Leigh Pruitt; three grandsons, James Jefferson Sinclair, Michael Elijah Leonard and John Thomas Pruitt; one great- grandson, Draven Knight Vicars; two nephews, Ronnie Hicks of North Tazewell, Va., and Ted Hicks of Grundy; and one brother-in-law, Donald Fred Falke of Newport News, Va. He was preceded in death by one sister, Minnie (Mooch) Hicks. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Christ, Big Rock. The memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Evangelists Michael Trent, Bob Smith and Sam Casebolt officiating with graveside services with full military rites conducted at the cemetery by members of the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. His pallbearer will be his grandson, Elijah Leonard, airman, USAF. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Big Rock Church of Christ.
