Shonna Lee Ratliff, 19 years of age, formerly of Vansant, Va., passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, from a brief illness. Born in Tazewell County, Va.,. she was a daughter of Norman and Denise Bailey Ratliff of Denton. She was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School Class of 2001, and reigned as homecoming queen and was crowned Miss Grundy Senior High in her senior year. She was a member of Big Prater Baptist Church. She was a resident of Buchanan County several years prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corps, having graduated from basic training at Paris Island, S.C., Friday, Feb. 14, 2003. Miss Ratliff is survived by her parents, Norman and Denise Bailey Ratliff of Denton; one sister, Amanda Blake Ratliff , Denton; maternal grandmother, Mary Bailey, Vansant; and maternal step-grandfather, William Jackie Deel, Vansant. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Willoughby Bailey; and paternal grandparents, Joseph Clarence "Buck" and Alma "Love" Ratliff. Funeral services for Pvt. Shonna Lee Ratliff will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Big Prater Baptist Church, Leemaster, Va.,. with Rev. Jeff Slone officiating with burial to follow in the Yates Cemetery on Leemaster. Friends may call at Big Prater Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. with services at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be members of the U.S. Marine Corps. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of the U.S. Marine Corps. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.
