Born on May 22, 1941, in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Arnold and Carrie Stiltner Clevinger. He was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church since Nov. 19, 1970. He was a member of the Sulphur Springs Old Regular Baptist Church where he served as moderator and has been an ordained minister since 1977. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Vietnam Conflict serving as an air policeman. He was a former town police officer for the Town of Grundy, a former mine foreman for the Harman Mining Corporation, a retired federal mine inspector roof control specialist for the Department of Labor, former notary of Buchanan County, former vice-chairman of the Buchanan County Housing Development, member of the Virginia Squares for six years and the honor of Kentucky Colonel was bestowed upon him in 1988. He was a member of the Sandy Valley Lodge 17 A.F. and A.M. of Grundy, a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonery 32nd Degree of Roanoke, a member of the Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Roanoke, member of the Florence Ann Chapter 133, Order of the Eastern Star serving two terms as worthy patron, member of the Legion of Honor of Shriners and a member of the Buchanan and Tazewell Shriners Club. He was an honorary life member of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada, life member of the American Legion John Ratliff Post 164 serving as post commander, past district commander, vice commander and chaplain. He was commander of the color guard for John Ratliff Post 164 for six years. He served as the American Legion past state commander, vice commander, sergeant of arms and past national vice chairman of foreign relations council. He was the Virginia associate representative for the Veterans Administration of the Johnson City Medical Center. He was the former president of the Commanders and Adjutant Club and a charter and life member of the DAV Chapter 59. He was a member of the Commanders Adjutant Club of Virginia Inc., and past president and officer of the Board of Directors of Boys State of Virginia. He was past member of the Ceremonial Sub-Committee for Boys State of Virginia. He was a former member of the Round Table of Boy Scout Troop 746 and an honorary member of Boy Scout Troop 746. He was the past district law cadet representative for the school system. He was a graduate of Beckley Mine Safety and Health Academy in Beckley, W.Va., and the Southwest Virginia Community College -- Mine Engineering. Roger is survived by his wife of 40 years, Judy Ann Clevinger of Grundy; one daughter, Jennifer Clevinger of Harrisonburg, Va.; one son, Dr. Roger Jr. and his wife Natalie Clevinger of Williamsburg, Va.; two sisters, Loudella (Tippie) and her husband Hulous Yates of Zephyr Hills, Fla., and Juanita Thomas and her husband Ralph of Penrose, Colo; and two grandchildren, Madelyn and Zachary Clevinger of Williamsburg, Va. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Ava Jean Rowe and Louise, Loretta and Helen Clevinger; one brother, Bill Clevinger; and two nieces. Funeral services for Elder Roger Lee Clevinger will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Larry Puckett, Howard Murphy and Eddie Newsome officiating with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. There will be services Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Clyde Stiltner, Mike Stiltner, Eddie Dean Stiltner, Kermit Clevinger, Adrian Clevinger, Bub Clevinger, Doug Clevinger, Buck McClanahan, Paul Rowe and Billy Yates. Honorary pallbearers will be members of John Ratliff Post 164, Randall Clevinger, Billy Stiltner, Terry Clevinger, Pete Stiltner, Jim Clevinger, Lyle Mutter, Hon. Nicholas E. Persin, Edd Fletcher and Ralph Lowe. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.
