Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Mrs. Bessie Pearl Matney Smith Sanson, Grundy, and the late Andrew Dan Smith. He was a life long resident of Buchanan County and a member of Vansant Church of Christ. He was a retired employee of Island Creek Coal Corp. V.P. No. 3. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany. Mr. Smith is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bessie Pearl Matney Smith Sanson, Grundy; his wife, Mrs. Judy Marie Stacy Smith, Stacy, Va.; three sons, Gregory Allen and wife, Tammy Smith of Statesville, N.C., and Ricky Ray and wife Michelle Smith of Stacy and Brian Keith Smith of Stacy; three sisters, Nancy Belcher, Grundy, Mary Anne Stacy, Gastonia, N.C., and Gloria Jean Owens, Gastonia; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one stepbrother, Buster Dotson. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Bee Branch Regular Baptist Church on Slate Creek with Evangelist Mike Rife and Evangelist Michael Trent officiating with burial to follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va. Friends may call at the Bee Branch Regular Baptist Church Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. with services at 7 p.m. conducted by Minister Andy Maynard and services Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. conducted by Evangelist Mike Rife and Michael Trent. Active pallbearers will be Roscoe Crouse, Ricky Crouse, Harold Vandyke, Jimmy Messer, Ricky Stiltner, Curtis Baldwin, Lawrence Mullins, Arthur Woods and Eugene Whited. Full military rites will e conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.
