Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Albert Cecil and Ida Mae Estep Smith. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a graduate of Grundy High School, Southwest Virginia Community College and attended East Tennessee State University. He was a disabled truck driver. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Lucille Lester Smith. He is survived by one son, Richard Lee Smith, Mooresville, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Patience Marie Helton and Richard Lee Smith Jr. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Angela Marie Smith. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roscoe Rife and James Chapman officiating with burial to follow in Estep Cemetery at the Mouth of Laurel Creek, Hurley, Va. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. with services at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Gerald Ward, Arlie Bowman, Ronnie Brewster, Roger Daugherty, William Daugherty and Russell Daugherty. Honorary pallbearers: Dr. D. Patel, Pim Griffey and Lemmie Barton. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.
