Cemetery Location:  4 miles north of Dillwyn, Virginia on Route #15; thence 2 
                    miles east on Route #617 to Browns Chapel; thence south 
                    (right) .2 mile on private road leading to former home of 
                    the president of the Buckingham Female Institute.  This 
                    grave is about 100 yards west of the house in a body of oak 
                    woods.

DATE:

1885  (The exact date of Dr. Blackwell’s death is not known, but the oldest 
inhabitants say they are certain it was not later than 1885.)

OWNERS:

Dr. John C. Blackwell.  Exact dates unknown; Court records destroyed by fire.
James S. Meadows.  Exact dates unknown; Court records destroyed by fire.

DESCRIPTION:

Dr. Blackwell was buried on a hill overlooking the old Institute grounds, as he 
requested.  The cemetery was not reserved when the place was sold by the 
Blackwell family.  It is now the property of James S. Meadow. (1937)

This lone grave has no marker, but is enclosed by an iron fence.  There are 
other graves on this hill which some of the oldest inhabitants say are graves of 
girls that died while attending school at the old Institute.  Dr. Blackwell’s 
grave is surrounded by an oak forest.  The present owner has kept this lot in 
excellent condition,

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

Dr. John C. Blackwell was President of the Buckingham Female Institute.  He was 
considered a devout Christian and was loved by all that knew him.
