Buckingham County DATE: 1812. The oldest grave. OWNERS: (blank) DESCRIPTION: This sacred spot is enclosed with a substantial rock wall. Each grave is marked by a small white headstone. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: On the Hubard estate known as “Chellowe” is to be found the family burying ground of the Bollings and the Hubards. The rocks used were quarried on the estate by slaves years ago. A handsome monument of Italian marble which was imported from Italy to Norfolk, Virginia, then to New Canton, Virginia, and then hauled to ox teams to its resting place at Chellowe, is a memorial to the beloved ones sleeping here. The following inscription is written on the obelisk monument: All of those persons to whose memory this obelisk is dedicated were buried at this place except Col. Robert Bolling and Louisiana Hubard and the graves are indicated by headstones, but the precise spot where Dr. Edmund Wilcox was buried is not distinctly remembered by any person now living, The belief is he was buried under the large Cedar tree midway to the east end of this enclosure. 1845 Lenaeus Bolling, Esq. who died in 1836 at the age of 63 and Mary his wife who died in 1825 at the age of 45.
