BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Evans Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Evans graveyard: 1937 Feb. 22 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 1.3 miles east Curdsville, Virginia on Route #633; thence south .6 mile on private road; thence east .5 mile through field. Buckingham County Off the old Dobson Bridge road; east of Curdsville, Virginia close to Willis Creek, is a very large old graveyard, which from all indications was once the property of wealth. A high broad rock wall enclose the graves but this has fallen in several places. There are five vaults with large marble slab tops, and eight upright tombstones, also a number of unmarked graves. This graveyard is one a part of the o ld Colonel William Evans estate known as “Merioneth”. “Merioneth” was said to be a duplicate of his ancestral home in Ireland. William Evans was under the command of Washington during the Revolution, and was later a Colonel in the Virginia Militia. Colonel William Evans was born in Bucks County Pennsylvania. The old place seems to be gone and almost forgotten. No one in the community seems to know who owns the graveyard or the surrounding land. there was a dispute about the property, which has never been settled. Baker Who departed this life Sept. 9, 1830 In the 24 year of her age In Memory of John Gannaway Born October 1, 1778 Died Sept. 9, 1836 In the 57 year of his age In Memory of Peter S. Grigg Who was born June 23, 1823 And departed this life November 25, 1855 Following are the names and the inscriptions on the tombstones. In Memory of Martha Evans Who died the 6th of March 1810 In the 45 year of her age In Memory of Capt. L. Brown Died Nov. 8, 1850 Erected by his widow Thomas H. Evans Born 10th Octr. 1825 Departed this life 7th Octr. 1829 In Memory of Catherine Gannaway Who was born the 12th of October 1797 And died the 29th of January 1827 In the 50th year of her age. In Memory of Martha H. Gannaway Who was born 9th of March 1920 And died the 5th of March 1825 In the 5th year of her age In Memory of Elijah H. Hendrick Born the 4th of August 1779 And died the 9th of August 1820 In the 41st year of his age In Memory of Mary J.
