BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Ford Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Ford graveyard: 1937 Feb. 16 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 4 miles northeast of Dillwyn, Virginia, on Route #15, thence 2.3 miles west on Route #617, thence one fourth mile on private road. Buckingham County DATE: 1846. Oldest grave marker. OWNERS: Ford Family, the original owners. J.C. Hanes. Mrs. W.R. Grey, the present owners. (1937) DESCRIPTION: The graveyard is by the lane that leads to the house. There are quite a number of graves here, covered with periwinkle and shaded by large trees of all kinds. Only one grave is marked, and that one has a flat marble slab covering the entire grave. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Fords owned the place years ago and were important people in the community. The Ford name is seen often on the old records of the court martials held in the county after the Revolutionary War. The Ford burying ground is found on the estate of late J.C. Hanes, who was for many years Superintendant of Schools in Buckingham County, now owned by his daughter, Mrs. W.R. Grey of Mt. Hope, West Virginia, and cared for by Edward Hanes. The tombstone inscription follows: In Memory of Samuel Ford son of Boaz and Hannah Ford Born October 30, 1790 Died April 2, 1846 Distinguished through a useful career of more than 40 years, devoted to mercantile pursuits, for Unfailing energy and integrity, the deceased discharged The various duties of citizen and friend with the Most scrupolous and exemplary fidelity.
