Buckingham County CONTRIBUTOR’S NOTE: THERE ARE TWO REPORTS MADE ON THIS CEMETERY THAT CONFLICT ON INSCRIPTIONS AND SOME DATES. I HAVE COMBINED THESE TWO REPORTS IN THAT MS. McCRAW’S IS IN THE UPPER PORTION OF THE PAGE AND MR. WILLIAMS’ COMES AFTER. DATE: 1857 OWNERS: John Gilliam 1857 John R. Gilliam 1858 Marshall Gilliam 1880 Mrs. Sally E. Wilkerson 1900 and the present owner. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This is an interesting old graveyard, though overgrown with vines and under brush. Though neglected the tombstones are in a splendid condition aside from being moss grown and weathered with age. The following inscriptions are to be found here. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: John Gilliam Born May 1, 1769 – Died March 2, 1857 In Memory of Judith Consort of John Gilliam Died Dec. 16, 1857 Aged 83 years and 1 month In Memory of Martha Consort of John R. Gilliam Born June 2, 1807 – Died Feb. 19, 1860 Oh, how sweet to sleep in Jesus Pattie B. Garden devoted wife of Thomas J. Garden Died Jan. 20, 1859 Aged 22 years and 3 months The old graveyard must be older than the earliest inscription shows, that is 1857 as the old house on the place is about 160 year old (1937). The older Gilliams, whose names are not known, lived here as early as 1769. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: H.C. Chappell, Andersonville, Virginia Mrs. Sally E. Tombstone Inscriptions Visit by worker. ******************************************* LOCATION: Go 4 miles west of Sheppards, Virginia, on Route #636, thence south 2.75 miles on Route #609, thence east on private road to house. DATE: 1852 is the date of the oldest grave marker. DESCRIPTION: The Gilliam Cemetery has many graves but only four of these have markers. It has been cleaned up in the past year by the present owner of the Gilliam farm. Prior to that time it was impossible to get to the markers for the undergrowth and brambles. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The markers are inscribed as follows: In Memory of Judith Consort of John Gilliam Died June 16, 1852 Aged 58 years, 16 days John Gilliam Born May 1, 1769 Died March 2, 1857 In memory of Martha Consort of John R. Gilliam Born 1807 Died 1860 Pattie Gardner daughter of Thomas J. Gardner Aged 22 yrs and three mo.
