BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Hanes Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Hanes graveyard: 1937 Feb. 10 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 2 miles northeast from Davidsons School House on Route #613, thence 200 yards east in a field. Buckingham County OWNERS: Colonel Hanes, the original owner. Since the Hanes ownership, the estate has been owned by Lawfords, Sharps, Meyers, and at present by Langs. (1937) DESCRIPTION: In a field in front of the house, which was at one time an orchard, is one grave, which is a bit unusual and noticeable. Over the grave is a large barrel shaped brick vault. The brick are cemented together. In front of the vault, closing the front end is an upright marble slab. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This graveyard is on the site of old “Humanity Hall”, the ancestral home of the Hanes family. The old home was burned years ago, only the chimneys remain. An acre of ground was reserved by the Hanes estate when the place was first sold and only one grave has ever been made here. The slab bears the following inscription: Here lies the body of Mary J. Hanes Second daughter of Capt. G. Brown and wife of Elijah G.
