BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Heath Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Heath graveyard: 1937 Mar. 19 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 5.6 miles southwest of Toga P.O. on Route 24; thence .2 mile west off Route #24 in a body of pines. Buckingham County OWNERS: Heath family first. Burruss Land and Lumber Co., present owner. (1937) DESCRIPTION: Close to the Appomattox line, back in the remains of a body of pines, is a family burying ground, a bit different from the usual country graveyards. The Heaths owned this acre and the surrounding territory years ago, but all signs of the house are gone and the land is now owned by the Burruss Land and Lumber Company. The burying ground is neglected and is a tangled mass of undergrowth. The graves are covered with laps and limbs where the lumbermen have worked with ax and saw. The tombstones have fallen, some are broken and others have been destroyed. The markers are all of large, flat rocks and the names or initials are cut on the rocks with a chisel or some other crude instrument. A number of the grave markers are intact and save for the devastating hand in industry the old burying ground with its home made headstones, remains a mute testimony of the Heath family.
