BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Jones Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Jones graveyard: 1937 Sept. 3 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 2.6 miles south of Togaon, Virginia, on Route #24, thence 1.4 miles east on private road. Buckingham County DATE: 1821. The oldest grave. OWNERS: Michael Hones. About 1776. Always in the same family. Burying ground reservation still in Jones family. J.L. Jones in charge. DESCRIPTION: In what was once an orchard, a few trees remain, is this family graveyard. A cool shady spot covered with periwinkle, and nature has been kind for after years and years of neglect this spot is easily found and identified. There are many graves marked only by rocks, but only one tombstone in the graveyard. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This graveyard is on the estate known as “Travelers Rest” and from data secured this place antidates the other “Travelers Rest” near Warminister, in Buckingham County. Michael Jones was the original owner as far as could be ascertained. As he was in the Revolutionary War, and lived and died here, he certainly must have resided here as early as 1775 or before. Just when he came here or if he was born here could not be secured. The house on the place has long since fallen away. The land and hunting right here belonged to the Blue Ridge Hunt Club and the timber to the Lumber Company. On the slab is the following inscription: Michael Jones Virginia P.V.T. Mitchel’s Co. 12 Va. Regt. Rev. War 1821 SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: J.L. Jones, Sheppards, Virginia, the great-great-grandson of Michael Jones. Mrs. Belle Flood, Andersonville, Virginia, a descendant of Michael Jones. Tombstone Inscription Visit by worker. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
