BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – McKinney Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, McKinney graveyard: 1937 May 4 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 4.6 miles west of Sheppards, Virginia, on Route #636, thence north 50 yards in a field. Buckingham County DATE: 1857. The oldest grave marker. OWNERS: The McKinney family, 1857 Clint Jones, present owner of surrounding land. (1937) DESCRIPTION: Located back of a tenant house on what was once the McKinney estate, just a short distance from the highway, are two graves. This is a neglected spot, covered with periwinkle, and shaded by several trees. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: One grave is that of the wife of a former Governor of Virginia, P.W. McKinney of Buckingham County, and the other of his son. The old McKinney home to which this graveyard belonged was burned some years ago and only a chimney remains of the home that reared an illustrous son of Buckingham. On the tombstones are the following inscriptions: Nannie Christian wife of P.W. McKinney Born February 5, 1833 Died November 5, 1857 She was faithful to her friends her family and her God. Our Little Charlie Charles Heath Son of P.W. and Nannie C. McKinney Born Sept. 29, 1857 Died Dec. 7, 1859 SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: Henry Chappell, Andersonville, Virginia, R.F.D., a life long friend of the McKinney family.
