BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Pankey Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Pankey graveyard: 1937 June 13 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 2.9 miles south of Toga, Virginia, on Route #24, thence east on private road for 1.8 miles. Buckingham County DATE: 1860. The oldest grave. OWNERS: Peter Pankey, 1860 Now owned by Pankey heirs. (1937) DESCRIPTION: In what was the orchard near the old house, now a body of pine woods, is a graveyard. It is a shady neglected spot, but lovely with periwinkle and honeysuckle. There are eight or ten graves each marked with a flat rock. Only one grave has a tombstone, this is a tall white slab, though moss has grown over it, and it is weathered. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: It is known that the Pankey family lived here before the War Between the States, and for some time afterwards. Mary, the wife of John Day, was a Miss Pankey. The tombstone inscription reads: In Memory of Mary Wife of John Day Born Oct. 18, 1813 Died Oct. 21, 1860 There remaineth a rest for the people of God SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: Mrs. Henry Flood, Andersonville, Virginia, a neighbor.
