BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Perkins Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Perkins graveyard: 1937 Oct. 19 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: Go west from Buckingham Court House, Virginia 1.5 miles on Route #60; thence north (right) on Route #56 for 2.6 miles; thence west (left) on private road through woods .6 mile. Graveyard about 300 yards from R.A. Hall’s house. Buckingham County DATE: 1803, date of marker. OWNERS: Owned by R.A. Hall and descendants, 1803 to present date. (1937) DESCRIPTION: Under two very large oak trees a short distance from the home of R.A. Hall is the Perkin’s graveyard. How many graves were here, if any, other than the grave of John W. Perkins, is not known. The grave of John W. Perkins is covered with the most unusual looking memorial. The rock vault over the grave is ten feet long, seven feet wide and five feet high. It is built of various sized hard black rocks, some large and some small, these are cemented together with some kind of black mortar which seems to be as perfect as when put here. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Tombstone inscription: This a Memorial to John W. Perkins Born May 31, 1752 Died March 17, 1803 Aged 50 years 9 months and 17 days This Memorial to John W. Perkins was erected by his fellow Masons on the land granted his father William Perkins by James II, in 1746. As John W. Perkins lived and died an old bachelor, his estate reverted to his sister, Mrs. Sally Perkins Moseley, whose descendants “yet own the land”. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: R.A.
