BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Pittman Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Pitman graveyard: 1937 Feb. 15 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 2 miles north of Andersonville, Virginia, on Route #638, thence 1 mile west on private road. Buckingham County DATE: 1847. The oldest grave marker. OWNERS: Floyd Epps, the present owner. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is about one mile back of the Epps house in a body of pine woods and while it has been neglected for years, it still shows the evidence of loving care in years gone by. Here are several large holly trees, a very large “yew” tree, and a number of lilac trees. The ground is covered with periwinkle. There are many graves, but only one marker, this an obelisk about eight feet high on which is a nice inscription. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Pittmans whose graves are here recorded are the material ancestors of Floyd Epps, on whose estate this burying ground is located. The monument was erected to the memory of Susanna Pittman, by her sons, Thomas and Robert E. Pittman. Following is the inscription: In Memory of Susanna, wife of Thomas Pittman Born Feb’y 2, 1779 Died Decr. 8, 1847 She faithfully discharged the duties of wife, mother and neighbor, lived beloved by all who knew her and died a Christian.
