BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Saunders Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Saunders graveyard: 1937 Feb. 10 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 4 miles west of Washington’s Service Station at the intersection of Route #15 and Route #600 on Route #600, thence .4 mile on private road. Buckingham County DATE: 1839. The oldest grave marked. OWNERS: Dr. Saunders, the original owner. 1840 Mrs. Hubbard, the present owner. (1937) DESCRIPTION: The old family graveyard is on a hill above the Cat Tail Creek, the place is a very wilderness of vines, briers and underbrush. There are a number of graves here with only smooth black rocks showing the location of each. Near the center of the place is a large Obelisk monument to the family. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: About 1840 a Doctor Saunders from Maryland moved into the Cat Tail Creek community and with his family lived and died there. Only daughter remains, a Mrs. Hubbard, who is about eight five years old. (1937) The tombstone inscription follows: Beneath this monument repose the remains of Francis, the son of Walter Saunders who was born on the 10th of Sept. 1839 and died on the 1st of Jan. 1842. To the Memory of Mrs. Mary Ragland Saunders Who was born on the 24th of June 1774 and died on the 9th of Jan. 1839. This monument erected by her affectionate son Walter Gwynn Saunders.
