BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Wood Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Edmund Wood grave: 1937 June 9 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: 4.6 miles west of Sheppards, Virginia, on Route #636, thence south 1.3 miles on Route #609, thence west .6 mile through a field. Buckingham County DATE: 1783 OWNERS: Edmund Wood, prior to 1783 Peter Hales, present owner. (1937) DESCRIPTION: At the foot of Wood’s Mountain is a deserted neglected graveyard of several graves. Only one grave is marked and this one with a soap stone slab about 6 inches wide and 10 inches high. This little slab is placed in front of a flat rock, the kind of rock usually seen as a marker for a grave. It seems that all through the years people have taken care of this unusual tombstone, for it is necessary to take it up from its resting place beside the rock to read the name and date, and to this day it has always been put back in its resting place. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Wood’s Mountain was named after this family of Woods. The tombstone inscription follows: EDMd E WOod 1783 SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: Peter Hales, Sheppards, Virginia, present owner. (1937) Tombstone Inscription Visit by worker. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
