BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Word Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The William Word graveyard on Tall Oaks place: 1937 June 9 Research made by Elizabeth McCraw Cemetery Location: .5 mile south of Buckingham C.H., Virginia on Route #633; thence 300 yards east of public road in a grove of evergreen trees. Buckingham County DATE: 1862, date of oldest grave marker. OWNERS: William H. Word and heirs from 1862 to present day. DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is in the garden at the old Word place and is enclosed by large Boxwood trees, and dwarf box bushes, and also several cedar trees. There are spring flowers here and a few rose bushes. There are several unmarked graves. About the center of the plot is a four sided marble monument erected in memory of the members of the Word family buried here. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Inscription on tombstone: Our Beloved Ones Father William H. Word Born Dec. 25, 1804 Died Nov. 25, 1885 Mother Joanna B. Word Born Aug. 3, 1813 Died June 17, 1896 Brother Wiliam H. Word Born Nov. 13, 1841 Died Nov. 12, 1862 AT REST When the estate was sold to the Gilliams, the Word family reserved the graveyard. The first date on the monument is 1862, though the older graves are not marked, they are certainly much older than this date. William R. Word, who died in 1862, was a Confederate soldier and died in the Army.
