Sarah Ann Harding of Buckingham Ct. married Wm. Patterson from Powhatan Co, Jan. 27, 1831. Reverend Edward(s)- Baptist. ( could have been a sister to Nicholas C. Harding-my gg grandfather.) Marriage announcement appears in Richmond Examiner Newspaper of Feb. 3, 1831, pg. 3. MARRIAGES: 1. William H Harding, age 22, farmer, of BUCKINGHAM CT. married Jane Chick age, 24, Dec. 21, 1859. William's father was Nicholas C. Harding living in Appomatox at the time (Appomatox census-1860) and Jane's father was W.A. Chick. Minister of record was J.C. Hamner. When William's mother died ( Elizabeth Carter of -Nelson County) Nicholas married Angeline Chick. Thus the families were interrelated and close. 2. John J. Harding, age, 34 married Nannie LeGrand. He is listed in the 1850 census for Nelson County as being a Millwright. His surviving parent was Hanna Harding. "Aunt Nannie" as she was known to the family then, was from BUCKINGHAM County, age. 24, and the child of M.P. LeGrand. Old Rev. J.C. Hamner married them too. This was a double wedding between the two HARDING cousins. Although all parties were from other, surrounding counties- Nelson, and BUCKINGHAM, and Chick from probably Albermarle, the weddings are RECORDED IN THE APPOMATOX MARRIAGE INDEX FOR 1854-1890. They were married at the Harding "old house" ( burned down in 1865- new one built then and still the family "old home place.") in Appomatox, the home of Nicholas c. and Angeline Chick Harding. NANNIE LEGRAND HARDING is buried in the family gravesite on the property of the HARDING home in Appomatox county. ( Call Aubrey Drinkard listed in Appomatox for information regarding access) CENSUS STUFF 1. 1840 census for BUCKINGHAM county shows a GEORGE HARDING with male children 5-10 years of age and one 20-30. 2. 1840 census shows SAMUEL HARDING CIVIL WAR STUFF William H. Harding from BUCKINGHAM county joined as a private Company B. in Kyles Co. VA. Heavy Artillery on March 6, 1862 at Appomatox court House.. Transferred to 20th Va. Battalion, Heavy Artillery on July 5, 1862. He appears consistenly on rolls from date of enlistment until his death at the engagement with Federal troops at Drewry's Bluff, May 4-16, 1864. An old family story told of the Hardings driving to the site of the battlefield to claim "Billy's" body. They rode down in an old, rickety buckboard. When they lifted the man's body up from his shallow grave, all the hair fell out of his head. William H. Harding is described as being age 25, at enlistment date, 6'1'', light complexioned, dark hair and whiskers, gray eyes. - SNAIL MAIL ADDRESS AND PHONES meredith Campbell Risen - 3469 EArl Core Rd.
