Obituary of Mary C. May, 1835 - Buckingham Co. VA The following obituary of Mary C. May was transcribed from the Richmond Whig & Public Advertiser (January 13, 1835). The original may be found at the Library of Virginia on microfilm. "Died.... ...After a protracted illness, with pulmonary consumption, at Maysville, in Buckingham, Mrs. Mary C. MAY, wife of Thomas May, Esq., on the 30th of December, 1834, in the 42nd year of her age. The amiable qualities of this excellent woman are so well known toa very extensive acquaintance, as to make it unnecessary to refer to them in this briefnotice. In fact, justice could not be done in so small a space in enumerating theparticulars of a character so free from all censure. Meekness, and cheerfulness, and an undeviating purpose of rectitude, engaged the affections and commanded the respect of all who knew her. Love and tenderness in the relations of wife and mother, were the distinguishing leading affections of her heart, as bear witness the deep sorrow and tears of a bereaved husband and nine children. But blessed be God, they sorrow not as those without hope. In the midst of this affliction there is cause of rejoicing: this lady was a Christian, and on many occasions during a long illness, and particularly in a dying hour, gave evidence that Christ was precious to her soul, and mighty and able to save. Mrs. May had long been a consistent member of the Presbyterian church, and well did her dying testimony accord with her former profession."
