It is one of the few documents that survived the fire that destroyed most of the records for Buckingham County before the year 1869. The 1793 will of Charles Cottrell of Buckingham County, Virginia was also mentioned in the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, Volume 38, Number 2, May 2000, Page 128 in an article called "Embers Amongst the Ashes--Old Buckingham Wills by Roger G. Ward. This is a transcription of the 1793 Will of Charles Cottrell of Buckingham County, Virginia In the name of God, Amen. I Charles Cottrell of Buckingham County being sound in mind and memory thanks be to God do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form followin: first I give to my wife Elliner Cottrell two feather beds and furniture two tables Desk chest and skillet to her and her heirs forever all the rest of my estate -----------I lend to my wife during her life or widowhood my will in that all and every one of my negroes be freed at the death of my wife. I give two hundred and fifty acres of land to be equally divided between the whole of my negroes to them and their heirs forever. All the rest of my lands and all my stock and household furniture I give to Richard Cottrell son of Jacob Cottrell to him and his heirs forever. My desire is that there be no appraisement of my estate I do hereby consitute and appoint my wife Ellenner Cottrell my Executrix and my friend Hardin Perkins my Executor to this my last Will and Testament as witness my hand and affixed my seal this fifteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety three. Transcription by Richard Cottrell Additional Comments: Charles Cottrell (1713-1793) was a brother to Richard Cottrell (1710-1792)of Henrico County, Virginia. Charles Cottrell as well as Richard Cottrell have their baptismal records in the records of St. Peters Parish Register, New Kent County, Virginia. The Jacob Cottrell listed in the will and a witness to the will is Jacob Cottrell son of Richard Cottrell (1710-1792) of Henrico County, Virginia.
