BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Bolling Albemarle county, formed in 1745, embraced nine other counties (one of them Campbell), which later were divided from it. The first entry of land on the south side of Fluvanna river was made for Colonel John Bolling, grants covering both sides of the river. Above him was the large grant of Nicolas Davies, also on both sides of the river. This John Bolling, born in 17OO, grandson of Robert Bolling, emigrant, was county-lieutenant of Chesterfield, justice of the peace and for 3O years member of the House of Burgesses. He married Elizabeth, the daughter of Dr. Archibald Blair, who was also a member of the House of Burgesses. Between 174O-51 John Bolling entered 2O,OOO acres of land in the present counties of Amherst, Buckingham, Appomattox and Campbell for himself and his sons. Bolling's creek in Amherst, south of Lynchburg was named for him. In 174-3 he entered for Archibald, his son, 60O acres on Opossum creek, of Fluvanna river. In 179O Robert and Mary Boiling of Chesterfield sold to Robertson Cheatham of Campbell county, 195 acres on Bolling's road, along Reedy creek, opposite the mouth of Pigeon Run, lying along the dividing line of the old patent, between Thomas and John Bolling. Three sisters, daughters of Archer and Martha Dandridge-Payne married into this Bolling family: -Dorothea Dandridge, b. 1777, m. Edward Bolling, and had a son, Powhatan Bolling. —Jane, m. 1st, Robert Bolling. -Catherine, m. Archibald Bolling. Archibald Bolling had two residences, Red Oak and Retreat, on the line between Buckingham and Campbell. He married four times; first, m. Sarah, the dau. of Col. Archibald Cary of Ampt Hill; a dau. of this marriage, Sarah, m. in 1792, Joseph Cabell Megginson, a member of the House of Delegates, and son of Captain William and Elizabeth Megginson, (dau. of Col. Joseph Cabell, of Winton, Amherst county, near the present town of Clifford). Archibald Bolling m., 2nd, Jane Randolph, cousin of John of Roanoke, a dau., Ann, of this marriage m. 1st, Samuel Shepherd Duval; m., 2nd (18O4) Joseph, Jr., son of Col. Jos. Cabell, who moved from Winton to Repton, in Buckingham county, where he died in 1811 and his widow died 1834 at The Retreat while on a visit there. Archibald Bolling m. Catherine, the youngest daughter of Archer Payne. Edward Bolling taught school in Campbell in 1833. Archibald Bolling d. in 1829 leaving to his 4th wife land divided by the Richmond road until it intersected with Joel McKinney's line. Lands adjoining David Robertson, Robert Franklin, McKinney, Wm. Ferbush and Henry Christian, he divided between his daughters, Sarah Megginson and Ann E. Cabell and grand-daughters, Pocahontas and Virginia (children of his deceased daughter, Elizabeth M. Robertson), and his sons John R. and Blair Bolling. The last named son, toegther with Wm. S. Diuguid and Wm. Ferbush, were appointed executors. Children of Archibald Boiling were: -Dr. Archibald Bolling, m. Ann E. Wigginton and lived on Cheese creek between Clay's Crossing and Boonsboro; —Edward, m. Ann Cralle; -Alexander, m. Susan Gray: —Pocahontas, m. 1st—White, 2nd Hill s. p. Children of Dr. Archibald and Ann E. W. Bolling: -Wm. Holcombe, m. Sallie White; —Harriet, m. ____ Waddell of Mississippi and moved there; —Mary Jefferson., m. a German, Tuesler, a leading medical missionary to Japan. Children of Judge Wm. H. Bolling: —Rolf E.; —Ann., m. Matthew H. Maury, of Anniston, Ala.; —Gertrude, m. Alexander E. Gait: —Bertha: —John Randolph; —Julian B.: -Richard Wilmer: —Dr. Wm. E.; -Edith, m., 1st, Norman Gait of Washington; m., 2nd, President Woodrow Wilson. The family of Judge W. H. Bolling moved to Wytheville.
