BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Candler Daniel Candler came from Ireland to North Carolina, but settled finally in Campbell; he received a grant of 37O acres embracing Candler’ s Mountain, on December 1, 1779, which in consequence received his name. He had then been a resident in old Bedford for sometime, as he and his son John were witnesses to marriages at South River Meeting in 1761, and John later was disowned by the Quakers there for using spirituous liquors. William Candler was perhaps a brother of Daniel. William married in 1746, Elizabeth, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Clark-Anthony, and she was a minister for Goose Creek Meeting, while her husband was a clerk of the Meeting in 1764. William in 1768 sold 17O acres of land (adjoining Edward Bright and Colonel James Callaway), to James Johnson and moved to McDuffie county, Georgia, in 1769; he had nine children, of these, -Mary married Ignatius Few; -Henry, married Miss Oliver, and was a major in the Revolution army; -Mark Anthony, married 1st, Miss Young, m. 2nd, Lucy White; -David, married Sarah Slaughter, of a Campbell family which had moved from Culpeper county. William Candler became a colonel in the Revolutionary army. Zedekiah Candler, married Anna, the daugher of Zachariah and Betty Terrell-Moorman, and settled near Asheville, North Carolina; his son, Zachariah, married Rachel Thornhill. In 1785, John Candler, married Ann Candler. Eleanor Candler (probably the daughter of Daniel, Sr.), married Byrum Ballard, son of Wm. and Mary Moorman-Ballard, and settled in Campbell about 1763. John. Candler, son of Daniel, patented 479 acres on Pocket creek, north branch of Staunton, he inherited the Candler Mountain tract; James, a son of John, married Agatha, the daughter of James Johnson of Amelia county in 1786, and moved from Waynoak, Halifax county, to South River Meeting. John Candler, Jr., married in 1799, Dorothy Stovall; Mary, in 18O5, married, Benjamin Clement; Daniel, Jr., in 181O, married, Martha King, in 1812, m. Mildred Candler. The Candlers became connected by marriage with the Russell family whose property was adjoining, and members of both families still own part of the original tracts. Among the descendants of Colonel William and Elizabeth Anthony-Candler are Governor Allen Daniel Candler, Asa G. Candler, Honorable M. A. Candler, Bishop Warren A. Candler, Judge John S.
