BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Clement This name is variously recorded as Clement, Clements and Clemens, and the family is reported as having settled in this country as early as June 1O, 1611. Elizabeth Clement came with her three children, Jeremiah, Elizabeth and Nicolas, together with two or three servants on the ship George. It is claimed that of all the families which settled at Jamestown and still exist, Clement is the 6th. Benjamin Clement patented in 1741, 129 acres on the south side of Staunton river both sides of Sycamore creek, and in 1755 patented 529 acres in the same locality. He served in the war between England and France as a private in Capt. Wm. Temple's Company of the 1st Va. Reg., continuing in service till the war ended; his bounty warrant was sent from Charlotte county in 178O. He moved to Clement Hill, Pittsylvania county, a property now owned by John Hurt; married Susanna Hill. His son, Adam, married in 1766, Agnes, dau. of Benjamin and Agnes Clark-Johnson, a granddau. of Christopher Clark of Louisa. Adam Clement commanded a company of Bedford militia in the Southern compaign of the Revolutionary -war. In 1780 he patented 1O2 acres on the head branches of Beaver creek; he was sheriff of Campbell in 1784, 1792 and 18O4; in 1785 was a member of a committee of 4 justices appointed to contract for building the county court house upon the plan of the old building at New London. He died in 1813; in his will he mentions his wife, Agnes, and his 11 children by name: -"William (will written 1843); —Johnson (will 1854), married Miss Scales; —Benjamin (will 1816); —Charles m. Nancy Hamlin; —Adam, Jr., m. Nancy Alexander; —Alexander (will 1866); —Juriah, m. Theophilus Lacy; -George Washington, m. 1st, Stella Smith, m. 2nd, Mrs. Sally Turner Cook; —Susannah, m. Constantine Perkins; —Sallie, m. Mr. Moore; -Agnes. Adam Clement, Jr., b. 178O, resided on Salem turnpike near Lynchburg and was one of the trustees, of that town, appointed by Lynch. He was a friend of Andrew Jackson, who often visited at Clement's home when passing back and forth from Washington; both were fond of shooting and the cherry tree on Clement's premises to which they fastened a target, was killed by the shots fired into it. Clement in 18O6 was appointed captain of a cavalry company and served in the war of 1812. Children of Adam, Jr., and Nancy Alexander-Clement: —Robert Alexander, b. 1812, d. 1872, m. Mary, dau. of General Terry of Bedford county; —Wm. Alexander, b. 1813, d. 1876, m. 1st, Martha, dau. of Thos. Hunter, m. 2nd, Mrs. Mary Perkins, served as clerk of the county; —John N., m. Susan Thompson of Pittsylvania, d. at Rock Castle; —Charles B. J., m. Mary Thompson, sister of Susan, went to California in 1849, but d. at Rock Castle; —George W., m. Isabella, dau. of Dr. Geo. Washington Clement of Turkey Cock Mountain, Franklin Co., he was a farmer and merchant; —Adam Clement, b. 1826, d. 1916, m. 1st, Martha Cocke, m. 2nd, Ann Cocke, he was Captain of Co. "C" llth Va. Reg., C. S. Army, later promoted major, was desperately wounded at Boonsboro, Md.; he was twice sheriff of Campbell, and state senator; his dau. Mattie, m. R. Hunter Palmer, member of the Legislature, who lived at Vineland on Molley's creek; Nancy A., m. Dr. Geo. W. Clement, Jr., and moved to Patrick county; —Juliette C., m. Charles Slaughter of Danville; —Mary, m ______ Jennings of Campbell. Major Adam Clement lived at Oakdale, not far from Mt. Zion, a large, brick house, upon stone foundation, -which has honey-comb cornice and arched doorway. Robert A. Clement was clerk of circuit court from 1871 till 1886; Wm. A. was clerk of county court from 1838 till 1845. Mrs. Nancy Alex. Clement, Sr., died in 1864. Children of Wm. A. and Martha H. Clement: Margaret, m. 1st, Samuel Wood, of Fluvanna, who died in Confederate service, m. 2nd, Col. Geo. "W. Pettit, of Fluvanna;—Win. Thomas, b. 1839, d. 1888, m. Mrs. Emma V. Wood, dau. of Jos. H. and Lucy Cobbs-Stone of Campbell, their son, Wm. Joseph, born at Catalpa, HiU, on Seneca creek, m. Mary E. Frees of Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; children of the latter: 1. Gretchen, m. O. S. Woodward of Richmond; 2. Wm. Tardy, captain in U. S. Marine Corps, commanding 19th Company, 4th Reg., now enroute to China. —Robert Alexander, married Louise Wliite of Bedford county, was clerk of circuit court; d. 1887. -Nancy Alexander, married Captain Benjamin Tardy of Otter river, Campbell county. -Richard Perkins, married Elizabeth White of Campbell county. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
