Cocke

  In 1742-43 Abraham Cocke obtained a grant of 289 acres of land on the north
side of Roanoke river. In 1747 Richard Cocke patented 5O3 acres on north side of
Bear's Element creek. In 1748 James Cocke patented 1O23 acres on the south side
of Staunton river at the mouth of Great Branch, adjoining King's land. In 1784
John Cocke bought 5O acres both sides of Falling river from Ajonidab and Eliza
Read. In 1786 John Cocke bought 36O acres lying on Molley's creek (alias
Briery), of Benjamin Arnold (the heir of William Arnold, dec.), and his wife,
Mary Ann, land which had been conveyed in 1765 to William Arnold by Benjamin and
which adjoined the property of George Eagers. Two years later John and Elizabeth
Cocke sold this tract of land to William Read. In 1790 John Cocke sold Robertson
McKinney 14O acres lying on the South branches of Bull branch at the corner of
the patent of Robert Douglass.

  In 1788 George Cocke sold Joshua Wynne 82 acres on Falling river, beginning at
Hornbeam's, near the mouth of Shoal's branch. The next year George Cocke and
Joshua Wrynne sold John Minton, hatter, 140 acres on the east side of Falling
river, the south side of Shepherd's creek.

  The will of George Cocke, recorded in 1792, mentions his sons:

—John in 1796 married Mary Tweedy.

-Thomas in 1789 married Eleanor Hightower.

-William

and daughters:

—Elizabeth married ___ Talbot.

-Jemima married ___ Gilbert.

-Mary married ___ Kent.

-Sarah married ___ Kent.

-Nancy married in 1782 Joseph Stith. 

-Rebecca married David Marshall.

  In 18O6 Drury Cocke married Susannah Cox; in 1814 Richard Cocke married Jane
Wood; in 1823 Archibald Cocke married Mary Bradley.
