BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Davis John Davis of Louisa county married Susannah Smithson; their son, William, born in 1755, married in 1774, Mary, the daughter of Henry and Mary Shelton-Gosney, Mary Shelton being the daughter of Ralph and Mary Pollard-Shelton of King William county. Davis died in 1853; both he and his wife were buried at South River burial ground. Children: —William, Jr., m. Zalinda, dau. of John Lynch, founder of Lynchburg. —John, m., 18O5, Mrs. Hannah Johnson, nee Anthony, the dau. of Christopher Anthony, and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio,, in 1814; died 1830. —Thomas, born 1777, m. Rachel Davis; children:-Annis Elizabeth, m. Pleasant Preston,—Micajah, m., 1st, Mary E. Phillips, m., 2nd, Sallie W. Selden; died 1884; Zalinda Lynch Davis m. Frazier O. Stratton. —Henry, born 1779, m., 18O1, Sarah, dau. of Christopher Anthony and wife, Mary Jordan. Henry Davis conducted a hardware store in Lynchburg. Children were: —Mary M., born 18O4, married Hobson Johns. —Sarah A., born 1811, m., 1st, William Ward Smith; son, Wm. W. Smith, Jr. Married, 2nd, Franklin Gillette Smith, rector of St. Paul's church, Lynchburg, 1824-1838, and teacher of a school there; moved to Columbia, Term., where he conducted the Female Institute; founded Columbia Athanaeum, which became a factor in Columbia's system of public education; published "The Guardian." —Robert Jordan, born 1815, m. Anne Carrington, dau. of Paul C. and Mary B. Irvine-Cabell (dau. of Wm. Irvine of Bedford). Robert J. Davis was educated at Washington College, where he took his B. A. degree; was a graduate in engineering at the University of Virginia, and graduate of law at Harvard; was for many years a prominent lawyer at Lynchburg and represented the city in the Virginia Legislature. His four daughters, Mary Irvine (dec.), Sallie Anthony, Ann C. and Lucy Lee, have been successful educators; the last named holds the position of Supervisor of Methods in Lynchburg schools and, Ann C. Davis conducts an industrial school at Tullulah Falls, Georgia. These two were formerly associated with William and Mary College. Their only surviving brother, Wm. Knickle Davis, for some years engineer in bridge construction, is now located in Roanoke and is engaged in insurance business. —Lucy Elizabeth, born 1822, m. William Tudor Yancey, a prominent lawyer of Lynchburg; their son, Robert D. Yancey, holds office of Commonwealth's Attorney for Lynchburg. —Benjamin, born 1785, married Catherine Gilbert, of Pittsylvania county. —Mary, born 1790, m. Cornelius Pierce; children, Mary, m. Benjamin Brown of Amherst; Susan m. James D. Taylor; Louisa m. Lunsford Lomax Loving; Robinson m. _____. —Nancy, born, 1792, m., 1814, Peter Dudley; children, John W. married Andusia Fourquerean: Mary E. m. Capt. Thomas W. Johns; Fannie J. m. James F. Payne; Peter L. m. Elizabeth Saunders; Deborah A. m. (2nd wife) Rev. W. H. Kinkle; Maria Rose m. J. Edward Calhoun. —Mary Annis, born 1805, m.
