H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Hairston The three Hairston brothers who settled in Bedford were of Scotch origin. Their father, Peter Hairston, the son of Sir Robert, friend and follower of Robert Bruce, left Scotland after the battle of Culloden, having fought on the losing side, sailed for Virginia and landed in Norfolk. First purchased land in North Garden, Albemarle. He had three sons, Samuel, Andrew and Robert, and a daughter, Mrs. Phillips. In 1743 Samuel Hairston purchased of Major William Reed 4OO acres on the branches of Rockfish river near the Blue Ridge mountains. In 1746 Andrew had acquired land on branches of Rockfish. In 1747 Samuel and Robert were living in the upper part of St. Anne's parish, Albemarle county. Samuel Hairston was one of the justices of Bedford court in 1754; surveyor of roads and commissioned captain of militia in 1755; appointed surveyor in 1756 from where Callaway's bounds left off to Blackwater Road below Long Mountain; commissioned sheriff in 1757; received 1248 lbs. of tobacco in payment for his services; allowed 5OO lbs. of tobacco for going to Williamsburg for commission of the peace and sheriff's commission; was burgess from Bedford 1758 to 1761, with salary of 5522 lbs. of tobacco; major of militia, in 1757; the first justice to take oath of office in the new county of Campbell and was appointed with John Callaway to meet the commissioners from Bedford to run the dividing line between the two counties. In 1781 Samuel Hairston purchased of Charles Caffery, Jr., a large tract of land on the east branches of Beaver creek, both sides of the main road, lying on a spur of Long Mountain for £10,OOO, and shortly afterwards sold 3OO acres of it lying on the creek's branches, beginning at Brown's and Lynch's dividing lines on the west side of Cooper's Mountain, to William Hawkins. Hairston died in 1782 and having no family of his own, devised his manor place and 1O6O acres of land to his brother Andrew for his 3 daughters; also 2 tracts of Kentucky land of 2OOO and 318 acres respectively, with exception of 4OO acres to be deducted and otherwise disposed of. Andrew dying the same year bequeathed his estate to his wife and daughters, having already provided for his two sons, Peter and Hugh. Of the three elder Hairston brothers, Samuel was ensign and lieutenant, Andrew sergeant and Robert ensign and sergeant in the French and Indian War of 1758, with the Bedford county troops. In 1755, Robert Hairston was lieutenant of militia, overseer of roads, and assignee of Jeremiah Rust in 1757; bought of Thomas Cooper 3OO acres on both sides of Opossum creek and sold the tract next year to George Stovall, Jr., his brother-in-law. In 1759 he was captain of Bedford militia. He moved to Henry county, where his sons, Peter and George also settled; served as a member of the House of Representatives. Upon leaving Campbell county he sold Andrew Moorman 443 acres in Lunenburg county on both sides of Pheasant creek by Murray's and Williams' lines. Robert Hairston married Ruth, the daughter of George Stovall, Sr., clerk of the House of Burgesses and had three sons and seven daughters. Samuel, son of Robert Hairston, moved to Franklin county; served in the war of 1812, first as lieutenant, later as colonel: his sword and commission are preserved by descendants, who have portraits of him, which were made for each one of his children. He married Judith, the daughter of Peter Hyde and Mary Sparrell Saunders, who was sister of Judge Fleming Saunders of Flat Creek, Campbell. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
