BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Miller A sister of Samuel Pannill of Green Hill, Sarah Bailey Morton Pannill, married David Fitz Patrick and their daughter, Francis K. Fitz Patrick married Samuel T. Miller; the latter •were the parents of William A. Miller, Lynchburg's fine old citizen who lived within three months of his century mark,-useful and honored to the last,—his death caused by a fall followed by pneumonia. Samuel Thomas Miller opened a female school at New London in 1811, but the next year he enlisted under Captain Adam Clement in a cavalry company to serve during the war of 1812 •which was sent to Mount Holly, N. J., but remained idle. He returned to New London and re-opened his school. He married in 1817 Frances Elizabeth Fitz Patrick of Pittsylvania; bought property in New London and taught there ten years. He bought 60O acres on Staunton river. In 1821 he took charge of New London Academy, where he remained two years: he then opened a boys' school in New London, but sold his property there and moved to his plantation on Staunton river; built Woodburne in Pittsylvania and conducted there a classical school which was patronized by families who lived in the surrounding country. He had a household of fourteen children, eight sons and six daughters; died in 187O, aged 8O years. Many of his children lived to old age. His son, Thomas, a Confederate veteran, was for many years a prominent teacher in Lynchburg schools; a son, Hartshorn Miller, was on the staff of the Lynchburg News and contributed to other papers. William A. Miller married Margaret Henry, a granddaughter of Patrick Henry. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
