CAMPBELL COUNTY, VA - HISTORY - Campbell Chronicles and Family Sketches Family Sketches - Moorman ----¤¤¤---- CAMPBELL CHRONICLES and FAMILY SKETCHES Embracing the History of CAMPBELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1782-1926 By R. H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Moorman The family of Moorman is of English extraction and the name is derived from moor, the prairies or commons of England, i. e., "man of the moor." They were Quakers and long before the Revolution, in order to avoid persecution in their own country, they emigrated to America. Zachariah, his sons, Thomas and Charles, and daughter, Sally A., settled in Nansemond sounty. Thomas Moorman's eldest son, Charles, Jr., married Elizabeth Reynolds and located in Louisa county, where he patented three tracts of land: also patented 40O acres in Albemarle county at the junction of Medium and Moorman rivers, from which circumstance the latter stream received its name. Later he secured a second tract in the same locality; he died in 1757. Micajah, son of Thomas, Sr., born 1735, owned land near Lynch's ferry in 1757, entered 394 acres on the north side and 25O acres on the south side of James river and purchased two tracts of 20O and 77O acres respectively on Ivy creek; also purchased land on Molley's creek. In 1762 Thomas, Jr., son of Charles, Jr., bought 2OO acres on Tomahawk creek and moved there in 1767 from Golansville, Caroline county, having previously married Rachel Clark; they carried to South River Meeting the following certificate: "Thomas and Rachel Moorman having removed from under our care and within the verge of your Meeting, requested a recommendation to you. After due care we do not find but that he has settled his worldly affairs to satisfaction and they have always been esteemed as orderly persons and held in good unity among us"—signed in behalf of the Meeting by Samuel Hargrave, clerk. In 1763 Zachariah, born 1732, son of Thomas and Rachel Moorman, settled five miles south of Lynch's ferry; in 1784 he sold to Achilles Douglass 766 acres on Seneca creek, that being part of Blair's Order, on the dividing line between Chrisr topher Anthony and his land. Samuel, a son of this Zachariah Moorman, lived at Walnut Hill, near Lawyer's Station, where there yet remains the family burying ground, and old residence. In 1782, John Murray, executor of James Murray, sold to Achilles and Charles Moorman, 3O3O acres of land on both sides of Seneca creek, (which had been granted to James Murray, late of Prince Edward county),—excepting 2OO acres which he conveyed to Andrew Moorman,—the lines being run by Nicolas Meade. In 1791 Andrew Moorman devised his land—beginning on both sides of the creek and extending to Venable's line till it intersected •with Jesse Moorman's line—to his wife, Judith Moorman; to son, Achilles, a tract of land on Rough creek; and provided for the sale of land called "Carver's," and an entry called "Poe's." The Moorman's, by intermarriage with other Campbell county families, seem to have a more extensive connection than any other family in the county: many from the different branches removed to northwest and southwest sections, descendants of whom may be found still bearing the name. 1.
