CAMPBELL COUNTY, VA - HISTORY - Campbell Chronicles and Family Sketches Family Sketches - Owen ----¤¤¤---- CAMPBELL CHRONICLES and FAMILY SKETCHES Embracing the History of CAMPBELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1782-1926 By R. H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Owen Owen and Jane Owen of Augusta county were among the early settlers of Lynchburg, where they established a school, which nearly every child in the city attended. This institution is said to have been one of the first in Virginia to adopt the use of Webster's Spelling Book at a time when his pronunciation and manner of dividing words was ridiculed. Mr. and Mrs. Owen brought to the town influences which greatly advanced its prosperity and refinement, in their love of flowers, drawing and painting, which latter arts were taught together with plain and fancy needlework in the school. The Owens also established a circulating library which fostered a taste for the best writings as the Owens Circulating Library afforded facilities for making many readers acquainted with the standard authors and stimulated them to pursue their reading still further. Mrs. Owen survived her husband many years and continued the school after his death. Of their children: -Sarah married ______ Hughes, died in 182O, leaving children. —Benjamin Franklin, and —Septimus D. died young. —Dr. William married Jane Latham of Culpeper county;—a sister married Dr. Henry Latham who established himself in Lynchburg where he pursued the practice of medicine. Many of the Owen connection devoted themselves to that choice of profession; Dr. Gray Latham, son of Dr. Henry, was one of this group. Dr. William Otway, son of Dr. William Owen, Sr. achieved much distinction in his practice. Colonel Robert Owen, another son of William, Sr., was for many years president of the Norfolk and Wrestern Railway Company; his son, William (dec.) was in the Medical Department U. S. Army with the title of colonel; a second son, Robert, Jr., has long been a United States Senator and resident in Washington City many years. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
