H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Payne George Payne, ancestor of the Paynes of Campbell county, came from Bedfordshire, England. He and his brother Robert came to America together, Robert settling in Fauquier county. George held a grant from King George, embracing land in Goochland, Buckingham, Bedford and Campbell counties and land lying on Dan river in southern Virginia and northern North Carolina. He married Mary, the daughter of John Woodson; was a justice of the peace from 1728-29, and sheriff of Goochland from 1734-37; died in 1744. His son, Colonel John Payne, born 1713, inherited a large fortune and the family seat White Hall, in Goochland. He was a member of the House of Burgesses from 1752 to 1768 inclusive, lieutenant-colonel of militia and member of the Revolutionary Committee of Safety of Goochland; married, 1st, Miss Archer. Children:—John m. Mary, dau. of John Chichester;—Archer m., 1st, Martha, dau. of Captain ISTath. West Dandridge of the English army; m., 2nd, Betsy Brooks and lived at New Market, Goochland county, an estate given him by his father in 1775;—Robert died unmarried in 1776. Charlotte, dau. of Archibald Bryce of Scotland, who bought 7OO acres on Ivy creek, Campbell county, upon which he built a residence called The Cottage, and to which he moved in 184O from New Market, the old Payne home:—Jane m., 1st, Robert Boiling; 2nd, James Ferguson;—John Robert Dandridge m. Susan Bryce, and lived for many years in Lynchburg; three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Bryce, Mrs. Susan Payne, and Mrs. Lilias James also lived there;—Lillias m. Dr. Richard Potts James; —Catherine m. Archibald Boiling (was 3rd or 4th wife); Children of Alex S. and Charlotte B. Payne:—Dr. Robert Spotswood m. Frances Russell, dau. of John G. and Eliza R. Meem of Lynchburg;—David Bryce m. Helen James;—James Ferguson m. Frances, the dau. of Peter Dudley of Lynchburg; —William M. m. Frances A. Mitchell;—Charlotte E. born 1829, married John H. Winston;—Harriet, born 1831, m. Captain William Steptoe. The old family burying-ground at The Cottage contains nine graves which are marked by tombstones: Jefferson Boiling, 1845; Mrs. Catherine Boiling, sister of Alexander S. Payne; Susan Payne, the wife of John R. D. Payne and sister of Mrs. Alex S. Payne; Alexander Spotswood Payne, 1858; Josephine Mitchell, the dau. of Rev. J. D. Mitchell; Charlotte Payne, wife of Alexander S. Payne; Harriet Steptoe, wife of Captain William Steptoe; Ida, the wife of Major William Payne; Kate, the sister of Captain William Steptoe. Colonel John Payne, m., 2nd, Mrs. Jean Smith-Chichester, widow of John Chichester and dau. of Philip Smith of Northumberland, and his wife, Mary, daughter of Baldwin Matthews. Children: —Anna, born 1758, m. Colonel James Gordon of Lancaster county. -Philip, born 1760, m. 1783, Elizabeth, dau. of Capt. Nath. W. Dandridge, and sister of Mrs. Archer Payne. —Jean, born 1762, m. William Lee of Northumberland. -Smith, born 1764. -George Woodson, born 1767. —Robert, born 177O. Colonel Philip Payne, a militia officer, resided at Airy Mont, on Seneca creek, near Marysville, a house yet standing, and near its entrance is a rock stable. Children: —Jane Smith, born 1784, m. Edith m. ______ Plamonda, of Oregon. —John Smith, born 1786, m., 1st, Susanna Scott; m., 2nd, Susan E. N., dau. of Paulett Clark. John S. Payne inherited Flat Creek Quarter; he built a residence called White Hatt, after his grandfather's place in Goochland. Children: Amanda m. George Yuille of Lawyers. Clementine m. Frank Scott.
