CAMPBELL COUNTY, VA - HISTORY - Campbell Chronicles and Family Sketches Family Sketches - Pleasants ----¤¤¤---- CAMPBELL CHRONICLES and FAMILY SKETCHES Embracing the History of CAMPBELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1782-1926 By R. H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Pleasants John Pleasants emigrated from Norwich, England, in 1665, to Virginia, settled on James river in 1668; his son, Joseph, m. Martha Cocke, whose son, John m. Susanna Woodson: they were Quakers. Thomas Pleasants was a preacher in 1739 at Cedar Creek Meeting, Hanover county, m. Margaret Jordan; Joseph m. Elizabeth Jordan; James in 1775 was a member of a select committee to procure ammunition for county use. The recurrence in many Campbell county families of Pleasant as a given name, seems to indicate extensive connection of that family with others, yet this supposition is not confirmed by the marriage bonds on record, and popular use of the name may have merely testified the regard felt for Preacher Thomas Pleasants. John Hampden Pleasants, son of James Pleasants of Goochland, moved to Lynchburg, where he established The Press at the time when the press of Lynchburg was at a low ebb, and he produced a revolution in the printing establishment. He married Ann Eliza Irvine. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
