BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Russell Records of many members of the Russell family are to be found, but no indication of the relation they bore to one another. Thomas Russell married Sarah Asher in 1796. In 1738 John Russell patented two tracts respectively of 281 and 137 acres of land on the south side of Staunton river. In 1749 lie had acquired land on Difficult creek. In 174O William Russell patented 3OO acres on the south side of the Staunton: in 1758 he was serving as a private under Major William Caldwell in Lunenburg county and in 176O one of the same name was a sergeant in Captain James Gunn's company, of Col. Bryd's regiment, in the expedition against the Indians, and was registered in 1780 from Pittsylvania county. In 1742 Andrew Russell was a private in Company No. 4; in 1758 Samuel Russell was a member of a company from Brunswick county: the same year Henry Russell was listed among those officers of the Virginia Regiment, who made an humble address upon Washington's retirement as commander of Virginia troops December 27th, 1758, which was directed "To George Washington, Esq., colonel of the Virginia Regiment, and commander of all Virginia forces." David Russell is mentioned under date 1784 and his property is recorded in early court archives. Philemon and Jeffrey Russell jointly patented 4OO acres on Miles creek. Robert Russell, who patented 35O acres on both sides of Flat creek, seems to have been the ancestor of those of the name who remained in Campbell, and his original patent has been handed down to his descendants. He patented two other tracts in the same section, but the patents for those were lost in their transmission to a branch of the family living near Franklin, Tennessee. This Robert Russell married in England Ann Bard; his will (1791) mentions his •wife, Ann, sons James and Robert, daughter Elizabeth, who married Jerrard Dougherty, and had a son, John; daughter, Catherine, unmarried; daughter Millie married a Fleming, daughter Eleanor m. John Robinson; daughter Mary m. James R. Rowland and moved to Kentucky, carrying with her the family Bible; daughter Ann m. James Boaz and lived on the headwaters of Flat creek; had two children, Robert and Ta-bitha, and a grandson, Pleasant Russell. —James Russell m. Rosanna Rutherford; had a large family of children, some of whom moved to Tennessee, others to Mississippi; his dau. Polly m. Barnard Rucker, and resided in Bedford county; dau. Patsy, m. Willis D. Elliott and lived near Winfall; dau. Nancy m. John Hay, and lived on Seneca creek and their son, James Russell Hay, was a captain in the Confederate army, and for 4O years county surveyor of Campbell. Captain James, Jr., youngest son of James and Rosanna Russell, born 18OO, married in 1836 Mary W. Fitz Patrick; owned 18OO acres on Flat creek and its branches; was captain of a cavalry company in the Virginia Militia in 1828, and a justice of the peace from 1846 to 1851. His children were: -Edmund, of the Confederate army, who was killed at the battle of Seven Pines. —Rosanna m. Burnley P. Johnson, died in 1911; children, Bessie P. (of Lawyers), and Mary B. who married Samuel B. Rosser. —Martha A. —James, 1st lieutenant of artillery in the Confederate army, died at Gordon, Texas, leaving daughters, and son, Richard C. —Robert, of Flat creek. —William H. m. Miss Candler; son, Robert A. state senator from 1920 to 1922, appointed on Board of Visitors of V. P. I. College by Governor Byrd. —Richard H., daughters, Mollie R. Duke, near Lawyers, Mrs. Charles Boaz Fitz Patrick of Gordonsville, and Mildred G. Crews, of Aspen, Va. A part of the original Russell tract lying on Flat creek was purchased by Lynchburg for the City Farm and lies just east of Candler's mountain. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
