BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Scott A Scott family of Scotch ancestry settled near Brookneal, where descendants are still living and are prominently associated with the business of the town. Joseph Scott, Sr., married Sarah, dau. of William Mayo, of Powhatan county, who helped Colonel Byrd run the dividing line between Virginia and North Carolina. Mayo had married Frances, the dau. of Enoch Gould, a leading merchant of the Barbadoes, where he had been banished for participating in the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685. Joseph Scott served in the Revolution, beginning as a 2nd lieutenant in 1775 and passing through the intermediate grades to major under General Muhlenburg; was wounded at German-town in 1777, and transferred to the 5th Virginia Regiment in 1781. His son, Joseph, Jr., was also an officer in the war waged for independence, having received the commission of second lieutenant under Captain Thomas Nelson in 1777, later made first lieutenant and 178O became captain. The younger Scott left Hampden-Sidney College to enter the army and equipped a company at his own expense. Major Scott was living in Amelia, before moving to Campbell and there his son, Captain Joseph Scott, born in 1752, married in 1778 Elizabeth, the daughter of Edward and Henrica Booker: children of this marriage were, daughters, Elizabeth, Judith, Sarah and Nancy; and sons, Edward Booker, Joseph, 3rd, and Jack; the latter married Sarah Munroe, and moved to Halifax near Br<3okneal: his children were:— —Charles m. Sallie A., dau. of James and Nancy Clark-Adams; —Alex married Margaret, dau. of Nathan Hancock; —Elizabeth m. John E. Fore, Sr.; —Tom, John and Polly unmarried; —Kitty m. Richard E. Adams, Sr., brother of Mrs. Charles Scott. Charles Scott was a railroad contractor; owned 100O acres on Cottontown road; iron works in Southwest Virginia; a flour mill in Lynchburg (where he settled); and acquired a nitrate plant at Saltville. He furnished the Confederate government 'with flour and nitrate from his mills. The wife of Charles Scott was descended from John Adams, whose people came from Massachusetts, and he had moved from Fairfax county, settling about 4 miles from Brookneal, where he built a home still standing and occupied by his descendants. Fisher;—Hallie m. Philip Withers, of Danville;—Wm. W. m. Eloise _____, of Detroit. Children of Elizabeth Scott and John Fore:—Wm. m. Maria Johnson;—John E. -Sallie m. John Hines and moved to Bowling Green, Ky. Children of Richard, Sr., and Kitty Scott-Adams:—John J. m. Nannie Callaway;—Mary E. m. Capt. Wm. P. Graham, of Del Rey, Calif.;—Nannie m. James Clark.:—Richard E. m. Mattie Cook, of Brookneal;—Emma W. m. G. B. J. duVal, she died and duVal married, 2ndly, her sister, Jennie;—Jesse, T. m. Lou. E., dau. of Rev. Rd. E.
