H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Stith In appointment of officials for newly established Campbell, the selection of Richard Stith was appropriate as he had been assistant surveyor to his brother, Buckner in Bedford, having received his commission for that office from the president and professors of William and Mary College, "if he truly and faithfully to the best of his knowledge and power discharged and executed his trust, office and employment according to law and his commission." Colonel John Stith, first of the name in Virginia, took up grants of land in Charles City county; was sheriff in 1691, and burgess from 1685-92 and 93; he married Jane _____, and their son, Drury, the first clerk of Brunswick, married Susanna Bathhurst, whose son, Colonel Drury Stith, was a Burgess from Brunswick in 1748, married Elizabeth Buckner and their son, Richard, who had settled in Bedford, as surveyor of Campbell in 1782, was appointed to run the dividing line between the old and new counties. Richard was born in 1727, married in 1753 Lucy, the daughter of John and Ann Cocke-Hall, a grand-daughter of Robert and Anne Cocke-Bolling, Robert Boiling having been son of Colonel Robert of Kippax, Prince George county, and his second wife Anne, the daughter of Colonel John Stith of Charles City. The county surveys made by Richard Stith are preserved in the clerk's office at the court house. Stith acquired a large estate in land. He began writing his will, disposing of it, when he was 54- years old, twenty years before his death, and as time passed added four codicils to the original instrument, covering several pages in the records. It is considered the best prepared will at the clerk's office. His whole estate was left to his wife, to revert to his children, the portion for each one being specified. In the 3rd codicil he says "I have left them in comfortable circumstances," in the 4th he devised his still and its appurtenances to his widow and son Richard; he first appointed Edmund Winston, John Fitz Patrick and Charles Cobbs his executors; ten years later he added his wife's name to this list, as executrix. His land embraced 115O acres including Mt. Hermon on Jumping run, 115O acres on Stony fork of Goose creek including Buck mountain, 146O acres both sides of Molley's creek; 12OO acres on the branches of Falling river; 40O acres near the head of Little Falling river on Mulberry creek, including the Narrow Passage branch; the land on Buzzard branch along the island road leading toward the old mill; land south side of Goose creek opposite Flat Top mountain, including Harpeth and Shalum; land at the mouth of Lick creek and 1O54 acres on Lick creek, including the seat Old Jacob and Nan; land on branches of Enoch's creek (according to a patent of 1787); part of Stony Fork tract. If Richard, Jr., was not satisfied with his portion he was to take land beginning at the mouth of Pompey's branch, up the same, passing by the mouth of Saucer towards Mr. West's mill. To his son-in-law, Drury Hardaway, was devised 1O5O acres on Lawson's creek, which was not altogether a gift, as he had made compensation. To Luke Morris Valentine was given 80 acres, (which Charles Talbot, Sr., "acknowledged,") in Campbell on Falling river, including the little old plantation on Lick creek, with mouth of the creek.
