H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Thompson In 1761 William Thompson patented 170 acres on Flat creek adjoining Wylie's lines. Campbell August Court, 1783, recorded the inventoried estate of Wm. Thompson, dec.; John Thompson, administrator; appraisers being Wm. Creasy, James Robertson and John Caldwell. In 1760 John Thompson patented 244 acres on Quarry branch and 199 acres on Dreaming creek; in 1761, 36O acres on Tomahawk and Dreaming creeks, this last tract he received by grant from George III through Gov. Francis Fauquier for 4O shillings lawful money paid to the Receiver General of Revenues for the Colony and Dominion of Virginia. The land touched Bramlitt's line and Callaway's corner and adjoined the land acquired later by Thomas Jefferson. John Thompson's will, 1791, devised to his wife, Margaret, £1O yearly during her life (the amount to be paid her by his sons, John and Andrew), and certain personal property; lent John and Andrew the land on Tomahawk and Dreaming creeks, supposed to be about 145O acres, at their death to be divided between their children equally; lent to his son, Matthew, use of his land in Prince Edward and Buckingham counties, lying upon the Appomattox river, at death of Matthew to revert to his children. 1O4 acres adjoining Edmund Franklin and Simon Woolridge to be sold and divided between the children of John and Andrew; 4OO acres bought of John Beard upon which son William had lived were left in trust for support of William's children, mentioning by name among the latter, Margaret, when she came of age; this 40O acre tract was to be sold and equally divided between William's children. £15OO and upwards due on a bond given by John Callaway to be divided between John, Andrew, William's children, Elizabeth Gill, Jane Mitchell and Esther Phair. To John Thompson, son of Andrew, the tract upon which he (John 1st) lived, containing 30O acres, he paying to David Thompson, son of William, £3O two years after he came of the age of 21 years;—that being land bought of John Cundiff; for the better support of his daughter, Elizabeth, wife of William Gill, certain slaves, to be held in trust by John and Andrew Thompson, and hired out for the benefit of Elizabeth. The remainder of his home tract,—about 7OO acres,— to be equally divided between the sons of John and Andrew, who were requested to assist Matthew with what they thought necessary for him and his family's support. The still was given Andrew, who had it in his possession. Slaves were given John and Andrew—others for better support of Matthew, also for better support of daughter, Esther Phair. Witnesses to will: Charles Patterson, William Campbell and Jacob Watkins. In 1794 Sarah Thompson m. James St. John. In 1796 John Thompson, Jr., married KLeziah Franklin; in 18O9 he patented 81 acres of land lying on Little Beaver creek. Jane Thompson, dau. of John and Margaret Thompson m.
