H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Thorpe In 1742 Thomas Thorpe purchased 2OO acres from Richard and Frances Shackleford of King and Queen county, Va. In 1769-70 Francis Thorp patented land on Goose and Buffalo creeks. William Thorp was a sergeant during the years 1755-62 in the French war. John Thorp was a soldier under General Forbes in 1758, and regularly discharged, in 1779; William, his heir-at-law, applied for his claim. Thomas Thorp, of Caroline county, a corporal in the war 1759-62, served in Colonel William Byrd's regiment in 1860, till properly discharged. William Thorp's claim to service was signed by Brigadier-General Charles Scott. In 178O Francis Thorp patented 1264 acres on Goose creek and north fork of Buffalo; 794 acres on both sides of Buffalo; 346 acres were patented, together with Jones and Read, 62O acres both sides of Buffalo; and together with George Callaway patented land on Elliott's branch. Captain Francis Thorp married Elizabeth (born 1743), the daughter of Colonel William and Elizabeth Tilley-Callaway. In 1782 Francis Thorp was appointed by the governor, first sheriff of Campbell county. In 1787 Pamela Thorp married Thomas Crump; 1790 Elizabeth Thorp married Wm. Jones. In 1792 Francis Thorp patented 14O acres of land on the west branches of Buffalo creek; this apparently was a son of Francis Thorp, Sr., who died without having made a will and his inventory was taken in 179O by John Campbell, Jacobus Early and William Scott, justices of the peace, with William Harris, administrator. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
