BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Wade As early as 1536 Armigil Wade of a Yorkshire family, was called "the British Columbus," because he was the first British explorer of the American Indies. In 1589 Thomas Wade was one of the Company of London merchants to whom Sir Walter Raleigh transferred the colony of Virginia. In 1656 Daniel Wade of Surry county petitioned Lieut. -Governor Nicholson to remit a fine of 1O,OOO lbs. of tobacco imposed upon him for re-planting tobacco after the first of July, a restriction made to prevent over-production that would lower the price of the product upon which the farmer depended for his revenue. Zackfield Wade gave bond to the governor 28 times, starting from 1811, as inspector of tobacco at Friend's Warehouse in Lynchburg; in 1843 he deeded a piece of property to his son, Zackfield, Jr., provided in his will for his children, and the children of his deceased sons, Henry and Zackfield, Jr. His son, Luke, was appointed executor. His property was on Pigeon creek, which runs through the Presbyterian Orphanage farm into James river at the old iron mines near Reusen's, near which his home stood, and at the back of the house was the family burying-ground; he requested that this reservation be enclosed and preserved. The name Zackfield may have resulted from the mis-spelling of Sackville, as occurred in the records of Sackville King, witness to a Wade deed. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
