CAMPBELL COUNTY, VA - HISTORY - Campbell Chronicles and Family Sketches Family Sketches - Walden ----¤¤¤---- CAMPBELL CHRONICLES and FAMILY SKETCHES Embracing the History of CAMPBELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1782-1926 By R. H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Walden The history of the Walden family is traced from John Walden, son of Lord John Walden of Ravensworth Castle, England, who settled in Leyton, Essex county, Va., in 1715, moved later to his home Walden Towers in Caroline, site of which is about nine miles from Bowling Green: the house was destroyed by fire about the middle of the 19th century. Richard, son of John, Sr., married Candace Hubbard. He received several grants of land in Pittsylvania county in 1761 and the same year was granted a tract of 565 acres lying across Staunton river in Campbell county; was commissioned captain of militia in 1767. It is not known that he served in the Revolutionary army, but he furnished supplies of beef and teams for use of that army. His will, dated 179O, mentions sons John, Charles, Richard: daughters Lucy Hudson, Mary Whitworth, Millie Mourning, Sarah, Fanny Bobbitt and Elizabeth Ballard. John married Sally _____ and settled in Caroline: was given a tract in Pittsylvania. Charles, who was after his mother's death to receive the home tract in Pittsylvania, married Elizabeth, daughter of Col. Charles F. Wall. His daughter, Tabitha H., married John Ward, 3rd of the name and son of William and Mildred Adams-Ward of Edge Hill, Pittsylvania county. Charles Walden served in a number of battles during the Revolution. Richard, Jr., third son of Richard, Sr., received from his father his 565 acre tract of land in Campbell, on the north side of Staunton river, which had been granted by patent from George III. Richard, Jr., was commissioned an ensign at Bedford court, served under Captain Jacobus Early at the battle of Guilford court house and afterwards acquired the title of captain. Milly, daughter of Richard Waldren, married Thomas Ward, the youngest son of Major John Ward in 1791 and moved to Ohio. Polly Walden married Thomas Goggin, son of Stephen and Rachel Moorman-Goggin. Martha, daughter of Charles Walden, married John L. Adams. Richard T. Walden m. . . .; Mary Walden married Vincent Snow; they were grandparents of Major David Richard Snow of Campbell county. Steuart and Steuart, a legal firm of Baltimore, Md., were employed by the descendants of Lord Walden in Virginia to endeavor to recover a portion of the English estate but it was found that it had reverted to the crown and the castle is used as a museum for antiquities. Charles Walden's will (1829) leaves to wife Elizabeth Walden, land at mouth of Jasper's creek on Staunton river along Thomas Adams' line (formerly Henry Ward's line), to the old pocket road, on to Austin's (formerly James Smith's line), to a mountain called Tinker's and onwards to a branch called Harry Hatcher's. To Joel L. Adams and Richard T. Walden, the lower plantation on Staunton river, formerly belonging to Richard Walden, Sr., and Callaway, along to Anderson's corner, thence along Austin's line on Tinker's creek to James Anderson's (formerly James Callaway's), thence running with May's line. For benefit of daughter, Martha Adams, the tract of land on small branch above canoe' landing along to Polly Snow's (formerly Vincent Snow's), to the corner on Sophie Dobyns, crossing Terrell's Mountain and McDonald's road, thence with Leftwich's lines; daughter Tabitha H. Ward and Polly Walden, after death of his wife, to have the tract upon which he lived. To grand-children, James, John, Ravenscroft, Louisa, Sarah, and Mildred Anderson, $10O each in money. 133 acres on Back creek in Campbell and Bedford, adjoining Anderson, Parsell and Quarles, to his three daughters. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
