BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Withers John Withers, of Lancaster, England, emigrated to America in the middle of the 17th century and settled in Stafford county, Virginia. He owned a large property in land, one tract of which called Cho tank, by a train of casualties in the family, fell finally into the possession of Augustine Washington. Thomas Withers, a descendant of John, married and had a large family. Enoch Keane Withers, born 176O, his fourth son, married Jennet Chirm in 1786, and died of apoplexy at his home, Green Meadows, Fauquier county in 1813. The mother of his wife was Janet Scott. Of Enoch's children, Robert Walter, born 1795, married Susan Dabney, daughter of Robert Alexander, the clerk of Campbell, studied medicine and first settled in Lovingston, Nelson county, then moved in 182O to Campbell and began the practice of his profession there. His father-in-law, dying soon afterwards, he settled at the old Alexander residence, Rock, Castle. In 1836 Dr. Robert W. Withers, was a. member of Virginia Legislature. He had several physician neighbors, of these Dr. Nathaniel W. Payne was a brother-in-law, who lived 1 J/£ miles distant and Dr. John Slaughter, four miles from him, thus it will be seen that the community had all facility for medical attention. Children of Dr. Robt. W. and Susan D. A. Withers were: —Jennet Ann, m. Dr. Robert Thornton Lemmon, and lived 12 miles from Rock Castle;—Dr. Robert Enoch m. 1846 Mary Virginia, dau. of Joseph and Elizh. Royall, of Lynchburg;-Mary Elizh. m. George D. Sanders;—Flora V. m. Philip T. Withers;—William A. m. Alice, dau. of J. Breckenridge Cabell;-—Dr. John T. m. Henrietta Alexander; he was Assistant Surgeon in Col. Thomas P. August's 3rd Va. Inf. Reg., died 1861 in a Richmond hospital and was buried at St. John's churchyard, near Pigeon Run, in Campbell;—Edward Horatio died aged 16 years;—Susan C., m. Patrick C. Massie of Nelson county;—Henry Howard m., 1st, Mary T. Anderson, of Nelson; m., 2nd, Miss Adams of Campbell; he was a member of Company "C," C. S. A., from Campbell;—Walter L. m. Bettie Hamilton of Nelson;—-Austin C. m. Missouri T. Riddick, of Suffolk: all of the brothers served in the Confederate army. Captain Edward Ball Withers, a brother of Dr. Robt. W. Withers, also settled in Campbell, at Ivanhoe, situated not far from old Oxford Iron furnace, Chestnut Hill, and Six Mile bridge. He married Evelina W., dau. of Philip and Dorothea Dandridge Payne of White Hall. Children of Edward Ball and Evelina W. Withers:—Philip T., m. his cousin, Flora V., dau. of Dr. Ro. W. Withers; lived first in Rustburg, but sold his residence there to Judge Frank Nelson and moved to Lynchburg;—Dr. Edward Withers moved to Danville;—Janet m., 1st, Horace Lemmon; m., 2nd, Samuel Holt;—Walter m. Mollie, dau. of Christopher Clark;—Robert Woodson m. Blanche T. Payne;—Zuleika m. Dr. A. Irvine Clark and moved to Lynchburg. Ivanhoe was sold to the Rode family, who have been living there many years: it is reached by the river road from Lynchburg or by soil road back of Long Mountain from Rustburg. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
