Callaway in the Va. line for 13 months. Transcribed on the Roll of Virginia at the rate of 43 Dollars 33 Cents per annum, to commence on the 4th day of March, 1831. Certificate of Pension issued the 12th day of Sept. "33 and ???????? Ready Spring P.O. Campbell Co., Va. Arrears to the 4th of Sept. 1833, 108.32; Semi-anl. allowance ending 3rd Mar: 34, 21.66, total $128.98. Revolutionary Claim Act of June 7, 1832. Recorded by ??? Clerk, Book E, Vol. 6, Page 10. [Declarations] State of Virginia Campbell County On the 14th day of August 1832 personally appeared in open Court before the Justices of the Court of Campbell County now sitting James Brooks a resident in the County of Campbell and State aforesaid, aged 72 in the month of June last … doth on his Oath make the following declaration …. That in the year 1780 he was drafted in the militia for a tour of three months, and rendezvoused at New London under the command of Capt. Leftwich, … there was a call for some men to join the Troops stationed at Petersburg, he among others volunteered for that service … but upon his arrival at Petersburg, the Company was made out in which his services were required, he then returned to New London, and joined in a Company under the command of Capt. Tait … and marched to Hillsborough in North Carolina. From Hillsborough to deep River, near the Battle called Gate's defeat, from thence he returned to Virginia, and was discharge from that tour by Col. Callaway. He served one month at New London under Capt. Handiff guarding deserters and Tories. That in 1781 about the first of April he was drafted for six months … under Capt. Pale; Lt. Plummer Thurston, and Ensign Perryman … the rendezvous was at Capt. Thomas Leftwich in Bedford County (the County of Campbell having been since taken off of Bedford) from thence we marched to Salisbury in North Carolina, where there were five or six Companies. Which we joined under the command Major Rose & Ward, from there we marched to … Camden in South Carolina where he was discharged. That he had been at home about a week when he was drafted for a three months tour under Capt. Bullock and he … marched to Yorktown and there continued until the Surrender of Cornwallace which he said he saw Washington & Lafayette, then a few days after which he was discharged at Williamsburg. That he still lives in the County of Campbell within one & a half miles of where he was born and raised, he has no documentary evidence that …. Are the only witnesses known or recollected by him living, by whom he can prove his services. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension … except the present …. James Brooks X his mark. We Henry Brown a clergyman residing in the county of Campbell and William Rosser residing in the same county hereby certify that we are well acquainted with James Brooks who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration that we believe him to be about 72 years of age that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution and that we concur in that opinion. Henry Brown William Rosser And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion … that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary Soldier and Served as he States. That Henry Brown who has Signed the Preceding Certificate is a Clergyman resident in the County of Campbell and that William Rosser who has also Signed the Same is a resident in the Said County of Campbell and is a Credible person and that their Statement …. I John Alexander Clerk of the County Court of Campbell do hereby Certify that the forgoing contains the original proceedings of the said Court in the matter of the application of James Brooks for a Pension. I was born in the month of June 1760 and where I now live then the county of Bedford Virginia. 2nd. Have you any record of your age and if so where is it? Answer. There is a record of my age that is now in possession of my brother Nelson Brooks. 3rd. Where were you living when called into service; where have you lived since the Revolutionary War; and where do you now live. Answer. I lived where I now live (Campbell County) then Bedford County, when I was called into service. I have lived where I now live ever since the Revolutionary War in the County of Campbell County Virginia. 4th. How were you called into service; were you drafted, did you volunteer or were you a substitute? Answer. I was drafted. [Page 6] 5th. State the names of some of the regular officers who were with the troops where you served, such Continental & Militia regiments as you can recollect and the general circumstances of your services. Answer. Maj. Ward, Maj. Rose in the service in North Carolina, General Green our commander, I know no more of the general circumstances of the service than I have stated in my declaration. 6th. Did you ever receive a discharge from the service, and if so where was it given and what has become of it. Answer. I received a discharge handed to me by Maj. Ward in S. Carolina but have lost it. I also received a discharge handed to me by Col. Callaway in North Caroline …. 7th. State the names of persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood, and who can testify as to your character and ***** , and their belief of your services as a soldier of the revolution. Answer. William Rosser, Sr., Jesse Wood, James Reynolds. [This following statement appears to be out of sequence.] Whereof I hereunto set my hand and Seal of Office the 4th day of February in the year 1833 and of the Independence of the United States the 57th. John Alexander, Clerk County Court, Campbell Virginia. [A typewritten document that begins in mid sentence on page 2, with a reference to an Elias Brooks.] Elias Brooks was allowed pension on his application, September 10, 1832, that aged about seventy-three years and living in Chesterfield County, Virginia, where he has lived since about thirteen years of age. There are no data in this claim concerning the family of Elias Brooks. … James Brooks was born in June, 1760 in Bedford County, Virginia, names of his parents not given. While residing in Bedford County, Virginia, he enlisted in 1780, served three months as private in Captains Leftwich's and Tate's companies. He served one month in Captain Handiff’s company, guarding deserters and Tories. He enlisted about April 1781, served about six months in Capt. Pale's (?) company under Majors Rose and Ward. He enlisted immediately afterward, served three months in Captain Bullock's company, and was in the Siege of Yorktown. His service was in the Virginia militia. The soldier, James Brooks, was allowed pension on his application executed, August 14, 1832, at which time he was living in Campbell County, Virginia; Campbell County was taken off of Bedford County. This was about one mile and half from where he was born and reared. Nelson Brooks, brother of this soldier, James Brooks, made affidavit in 1833 in Campbell County, Virginia. There are no further data in this claim concerning the family of James Brooks.
