That he the said Lewellen Jones sometime in the year 1779 enlisted as a soldier in the service of the United States in the Revolutionary War for the term of Eighteen months and joined under Colo. Parkers Regiment at Petersburg, the number of which doesn't remember, sometime after was attached to the Command of Colo. Heth, and afterwards was under the Command of Colo. Abraham Buford and was present at "Bufords defeat." That he served his term of Eighteen months and was discharged at Hillsborough in North Carolina, which discharge is now lost. That he has no evidence of this said service now in his power except the sworn certificate of Hezekiah Morton who was a Captain in the Service of the United States in the said Revolutionary War (which said certificate is now exhibited to the subscriber enotorating the above declaration) - and that he the said Lewellen Jones now about Fifty Eight years old is in reduced circumstances and needs the assistance of his county for support. And William Almond being also this day first sworn before me, saith that his is well acquainted with the above named Lewellen Jones and knows him to be in reduced circumstances is as to require aid for his support. And it thus appearing to my satisfaction that the said Lewellen Jones was in the service of the United States in the Revolutionary War engaged against the Common Enemy for the space of nine months & more & that he is now in reduced circumstances so as to require the aid of his county for support, I do hereby certify and send the same to the Secretary for the department of war of the United States to avail as it should to enable the said Lewellen Jones to obtain the provision lately made by an act of Congress for certain persons who were engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War, under my hand issued, there being no seal of office this the 4th day of November 1818. The above named Lewellen Jones came this day before me, & makes the following addition to the preceeding declaration upon oath, that is to say that he enlisted at Charlotte Courthouse in Virginia, in Captain Taliaferro's company, was attached to Colo. Rich'd Parkers Regiment in General Charles Scotts Brigadage, of the Virginia line on continental establishment, which I certify to the Secretary of War. Wm. Daniel {seal} Feb. 19, 1839 In order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of the 7th July, 1838, entitled "An Act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows." State of Virginia: Campbell County to wit: On this 19th day of February, 1839, personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace in and for the County and State aforesaid, Catherine Jones a resident of said County and State, aged 75 years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress, passed July 7th 1838, entitled "An Act granting half pay and pensions to certain Widows." That she is the Widow of Lewellen Jones late of the said County and State, who was a Private in the war of the Revolution, and a pensioner of the United States under the Act of Congress passed March 18th 1818. She declares, that she knows but little, if any thing, in regard to the services of her late husband in the Revolutionary War, as coming within her personal knowledge but she has often in his life time, heard him say, that he was in active service a good deal, and was engaged in many battles. That he suffered many hardships and privations. That she has heard the same repeated by others. How long he served, she is unable to say. She simply knows that fact that he was a pensioner of the United States, and had seen his Pension certificate; that she recollects his preparing is declaration, in which his services were set forth, and that she understood the said declaration with accompanying proofs were forwarded to the War Department, or the proper department, at Washington City, where she supposes they still remain. To which declaration and proofs she refers for particulars of service, and beg that the same may be taken as part of his declaration. She further declares that she was married to the said Lewellen Jones on the 26th day of February 1789; that her husband, the aforesaid Lewellen Jones, died on the 30th day of October, 1821; that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first day of January seventeen hundred and ninty four: to wit, at the time above stated. Catherine Jones {her mark} Sworn to and subscribed before me a Justice of the peace in and for the County and State aforesaid, this 17th day of February 1839. A.W. Wimbush JP Virginia: Campbell County to wit: I o hereby certify that I am well acquainted with Catherine Jones, the widow of Lewellen Jones deceased, late of Campbell, who was a pensioner in the United States, and know the fact she is an old lady, and recently by accident broke her arm, in consequence of which bodily infirmity and other causes, I do consider her entirely unfit and unable to attend the County court of Campbell to make the foregoing Declaration. Given under my hand this 19th day of February, 1839. I farther certify that she is a credible person and her statement entitled to full confidence. Wimbush JP Virginia: Campbell County to wit: I do hereby certify as coming within my personal knowledge and recollection that Lewellen Jones, late of Campbell, departed this life on the 30th day of October, 1821; that he left at the time of his death, his widow Catherine Jones, who is still alive, resident of the County of Campbell and that she has remained a widow ever since his death and is still his widow. Oliver Elder Sworn to and subscribed before me. I farther certify that he is a credible person and his statement entitled to full confidence. Given under my hand this 19th day of February 1839. A.W. Wimbush JP July 10, 1820 Virginia, Campbell County On the 10th day of July 1820 personally appeared in open Court being a Court of Record for the County aforesiad Lewellen Jones, aged Seventy year Old Resident in the said County who being first duly Sworn according to Law doth on his Oath declare that he Served in Revolutionary War as follows, He enlisted as Soldier the Virginia line in the Month of June 1779 for the term of 18 Months, that he was of Capt Boyers Compy. Of Colo. Bufords detachment, Genl Scotts Brigade in the United States service as ? appear from my Original declaration bearing the date the 4th day of November 1818. And that he has received a Pension by virtue of a Certificate issued from the War department bearing date the 5th day of Juen 1819 Number 11,355. And so do Solemnly swear that I was a Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that
