CAROLINE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Boutwell and Smith Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Boutwell and Smith graveyard: 1937 Mar. 22 Research made by Selma Farmer Cemetery Location: 3.1 miles southeast of Port Royal, Virginia, on Route #17, thence .8 mile north of Route #17, on private road. Caroline County DATE: The first person to be buried here was William Boutwell, who died July 7, 1803 OWNERS: This graveyard has always been the property of the Boutwells and Smiths and is still kept by descendants of those families. DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is located in a grove of trees and has an iron fence around it. It is a very difficult place to get to as the road has not been well kept and has been allowed to become partly overgrown with young trees. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following are some inscriptions taken from the tombs: William Boutwell Died July 7, 1803 His Wife, Sebrina Hawkins Boutwell Children: John Thomas Livingston William Hawkins Sarah Mary and Elizabeth Mosley Boutwell Birkenhead Hawkins Boutwell June 9, 1777 – Sept. 19, 1833 His Wife Catherine Harrison Smith Boutwell June 12, 1787 – Feb. 15, 1873 Children: William Smith Boutwell, Born Nov. 13, 1813 Birkenhead Hawkins Boutwell, July 9, 1819-Dec. 10, 1863 Joseph Walter Boutwell, Born April 10, 1821 Martha Smith Boutwell, Smith, June 19, 1825-Feb. 3, 1903 An old record book was taken from Caroline to Alexandria, which had been used for records of the Surveyor’s Office of Caroline County. The 39th survey recorded here is for William Boutwell for eighteen acres on December 31, 1759. Birkenhead Hawkins Boutwell, mentioned above, was a descendant of the original Boutwell settler who came to America in the very beginning of the eighteenth century. He married Catherine Harrison Smith, daughter of William Smith of Revolutionary fame, granddaughter of Captain Joseph Smith and great- granddaughter of Sir William Sidney Smith of England.
