[PAGE TWO] Virginia Frances Jones widow of Edward Jones who was a pensioner under the Act of [blank] and who died in the year 1807 of Caroline Co in the State of Virginia who was a private in the [blank] commanded by Captain [blank] of the [blank] commanded by Gen. Clark of the Virginia State troops for 2 years. Inserted on the Roll of Virginia at the rate of 80 Dollars [blank] Cents for annum to commence on the 4th day of March 1836 Certificate of Pension issued the 29th day of July 1844 and sent to H. H. State Line Act: March 3d 1843 Index Vol. A, pg. 377 Arrangement of 1870 [PAGES FIVE - EIGHT] NOTE BY THIS TRANSCRIBER = the following deposition is as written, however, I believe where I have put the [***] should be the name - Frances Jones State of Virginia Caroline County On this the 4th day of May 1843 personally appeared before me, Thos. Hurt, a justice of the peace in and for the County aforesaid and state of Virginia [***] aged about 84 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to the benefits of the act of Congress passed July 7th 1838. That she was married to one Edward Jones who was a private in the War of the Revolution she knows nothing of the legenth of time he served, the officers under whom he served or the Regiment to which he belonged but has often heard him say that he served nearly through the whole war that he was under Genl Clark and frequently spoke of narrow escapes he had he fought with the Indians and was a great deal of his time to west that she has herd (sic) her deceased husband the said Edward Jones speak very often of the many hard ships he endured she knows too that he often said the country owed him land for his services he having been more entitled than many who had received land but she is satisfied that he died without ever receiving his land the said Edward Jones died in the county in the year 1807 and that she is now and has remained the widow of said Jones to whom she was married by parson John Young on the 7th day of June of 1792. Frances "X" Jones Sworn to and subscribed before me this the 17th day of May 1840. Thos Hurt, J.P. I also certify that Mrs. Jones is a neighbor of mine that from my own age compared with that of her oldest children she must have been married nearly sixty years since and Mrs. Jones standing in society is such as to forbid any idea contrary to that of her having been legally married and from general respect I have no doubt that her husband did serve in the regular army as she represents in her declaration. I further note certify that from old age and infirmity she could not well attend court. Given under my hand this the day and year above written. Thos. Hurt JP Virginia In Caroline County to wit 10th May 1843 I John S Pendleton Clerk of the County Court of the County & state aforesaid and hereby certify that the Court having examined the proceedings of Thomas Hurt a member of this body in the Declaration of Mrs. Frances Jones approve of the same and order it to be certified to the War Department. I further certified that Thomas Hurt whose name is subscribed to the foregoing Certificate is and was at the time of signing of the same a Justice of the Peace on and for the said county, duly - - and qualified and that the signatures purporting to be his are genuine. In testimony whereof, have heretofore subscribed my --- --- this seal of my said office this 12th day of May 1843. John S. Pendleton, Clerk of Caroline County Court I further certify that the Records of my Office furnished as evidence of the marriage of Edward Jones and Frances Jones, many of the Records ---- ber destroyed or lost by fire. Given under my hand and seal aforesaid this 12th day of May 1843 John S. Pendleton Clerk of Caroline County Court. I Joseph N. Dickens of the County of Caroline and State of Virginia do hereby Certify that I was well acquainted with Edward Jones of this County and that the said Jones lived and died just in my neighborhood and that the said Jones was in the war of the Revolution but how long he served, I cannot now say nor do I know what officers he was under. I myself being only in the militia. Given under my hand this 27th day of April 1843 Joseph "N" Dickens On this the 27th of April 1843 personally appeared before me Jos. N. Dickens and made oath in due form of law to the foregoing facts in the above certificate. I also certify that Mr. Dickens is a man whose statements are entitled to full credit. Given under my hand this the day and year above written. Robert B. Corbin Virginia, Caroline County to wit: I John S. Pendleton Clerk of the County of & state aforesaid do hereby certify that Robert B. Corbin whose name is subscribed to the within certificate is a justice of the peace in and for the said county and that the signature purporting to be his is genuine.
